Those who had no answer sat there silently. Brahmins and householders mocked and left the monastery. When this happened, the monks reported it to the Blessed One. The Blessed One thought, "It is wrong for Brahmins and householders to mock. Therefore, the date should be announced in the Sangha." Thinking this, he said to the monks, "It is wrong for Brahmins and householders to mock. Therefore, announce the date in the Sangha." After the Blessed One said to announce the date in the Sangha, The monks announced the date in the Sangha but did not observe the fortnightly fast. Householders and Brahmins said, "Venerable ones, you do not even know how to observe the fortnightly fast. If you do not observe it, how will you know the waxing and waning fortnights?" Those who had no answer sat there silently. When this happened, the monks reported it to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said, "Observe the fortnightly fast and announce the date." The way to announce it is as follows: When the entire Sangha has gathered and is seated, one monk, seated first in order of seniority, with reverence, joins his palms and speaks these words: "Today is the first day of the waning fortnight. For the sake of the owner of the monastery and the gods, recite each verse." The monks announced the date but did not mention the name of the owner of the monastery. The Blessed One said, "Also mention the name of the owner of the monastery." Say this: "The donor, named so-and-so, will invite the Sangha of monks for a meal tomorrow. Therefore, venerable ones, please cherish them with a virtuous mind." If there are other offerings for the owner of the monastery, also cherish the donor of the offerings with a virtuous mind. How does one cherish them with a virtuous mind? Because by doing so, their virtuous qualities will increase and not decrease. Similarly, others that exist there as conditions

Also, all sentient beings should be addressed by their respective names. Monks, after all the words are spoken, each of you should recite a verse individually. Brahmins and householders also came there and asked, 'Venerable ones, what is the date today?' They replied, 'Today is the fifteenth.' The Brahmins and householders said, 'Venerable ones, today is the fourteenth for all the people in the world, how is it the fifteenth for you? Do you not intercalate days?' The monks reported this matter to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One instructed, 'You should also intercalate days.' After the Blessed One said, 'You should intercalate days,' the monks intercalated days every half month. Brahmins and householders also came there and asked, 'Venerable ones, what is the date today?' The monks replied, 'Today is the fourteenth for us.' They said again, 'Venerable ones, today is the fifteenth for all the people in the world, how is it the fourteenth for you? Do you intercalate every day every half month?' They replied, 'We do intercalate.' The Brahmins and householders were like that, and the monks reported this matter to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One instructed, 'Monks, the Brahmins and householders' ridicule is justified, therefore do not intercalate days every half month. Intercalate days after one and a half or two months have passed. In this way, there are six fourteenth-day Uposathas in a year, and the rest are fifteenth-day Uposathas.' Then, the Brahmins and householders came there again and asked, 'Venerable ones, what month is this month for you now?' The monks replied, 'This is our last summer month.' They said, 'Venerable ones, this month is the middle summer month for everyone in the world, how is it the last summer month for you? Have you not missed a leap month?' They replied, 'We have not missed it.' The Brahmins and householders began to ridicule, and the monks reported this matter to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One instructed, 'Monks, the Brahmins and householders' ridicule
