One should examine in this way. What are the eight ways of examining others? Among those Sanghas, regarding the monks who hold the Sutra Pitaka, the Vinaya Pitaka, and the Matrika, will what I say as the Buddha's teachings be accepted? At that time, among the monks who hold the Sutra Pitaka, the Vinaya Pitaka, and the Matrika, who will think: How should this dispute be pacified according to the Dharma, according to the Vinaya, as the Teacher has taught? Among those Sanghas, will the elder, middle, and newly ordained monks think: How should we admonish the monks on our respective sides according to the Dharma? Will this dispute spread to the king's palace? Will it spread among the relatives? Will those venerable ones not seek to pacify the dispute elsewhere? Will those venerable ones seek to pacify the dispute within this Sangha? These eight ways are to examine others. Upali, in this way, after examining oneself and others in sixteen ways, one should properly handle the dispute. Upali, as an impartial Vinaya holder, if one possesses these five qualities, one will not be able to pacify the dispute. What are the five? Not knowing the dispute, not knowing the cause of the dispute, not knowing how to properly handle the dispute, not knowing how to pacify the dispute, and not knowing how to prevent the dispute from recurring after it has been pacified. Upali, as an impartial Vinaya holder, if one possesses these five qualities, one will not be able to pacify the dispute. Upali, as an impartial Vinaya holder, if one possesses these five qualities, one will be able to pacify the dispute. What are the five? Knowing the dispute, knowing the cause of the dispute, knowing how to properly handle the dispute, knowing how to pacify the dispute, and knowing how to prevent the dispute from recurring after it has been pacified. Upali, as an impartial Vinaya holder, if one possesses these five qualities, one will be able to pacify the dispute. Therefore, Upali, when an impartial Vinaya holder properly handles a dispute, one should examine the monks who debate and answer in sixteen ways, and examine the monks who answer in eight ways.

What should be done? By which eight aspects should one examine a disputing monk? Namely, conduct, the place of conduct, friendship, making friends, bodily actions, verbal actions, livelihood, and extensive learning. Then, Upāli, the impartial Vinaya holder, would think thus: 'This venerable one is wicked, acting wickedly, with wicked friendships, wicked companions, wicked bodily actions, wicked verbal actions, wicked livelihood, and wicked learning. This venerable one is capable of acting improperly towards pure monks and can also cause such disputes within the Sangha. Instruct him not to speak in that way.' Then, Upāli, the impartial Vinaya holder, would think thus: 'This venerable one is virtuous, with virtuous conduct, a virtuous place of conduct, virtuous friendships, virtuous companions, virtuous bodily actions, virtuous verbal actions, virtuous livelihood, and virtuous learning. This venerable one is not capable of acting improperly towards pure monks and will not cause such disputes within the Sangha. Therefore, instruct him to speak in that way.' Upāli, one should examine a disputing monk in such eight ways. For a responding monk, one should examine him in these eight ways: conduct, the place of conduct, friendship, companions, bodily actions, verbal actions, livelihood, and extensive learning. Then, Upāli, the impartial Vinaya holder, would think thus: 'This venerable one is wicked, with wicked conduct, a wicked place of conduct, wicked friendships, wicked companions, wicked bodily actions, wicked verbal actions, wicked livelihood, and wicked learning. This venerable one is capable of entering into such a state.' Therefore, at that time, speak gently to the disputing monk and say these words to the responding monk: 'Venerable one, at that time, what was the nature of your bodily fabrication? What was the nature of your verbal fabrication? What was the nature of your mental fabrication?' Let him acknowledge it as it is. Upāli, then the impartial Vinaya holder would think thus: 'This venerable one...'
