Likewise, when a monk who is being reproached reproaches, he should be in five states in order to distinguish the monk who is reproaching. What are the five states? Rising from the seat, taking off the shoes, baring one shoulder, bowing with palms joined to the elders, maintaining respect, being in a state of awe, one should distinguish the monk who is reproaching. If a monk who is being reproached wants to distinguish the monk who is reproaching, he should examine the monk who is reproaching in five ways. What are the five? Is this venerable one virtuous and previously complete? Does he have shame and remorse? Is he bound by vows and does he want to be bound by vows? Is this venerable one learned, does he hold what he has heard, does he accumulate learning? Is he skilled in reciting the scriptures? Is he very certain about the Vinaya, the higher Vinaya, and the Sutras? The monk who is being reproached should examine the reproaching monk with these five states, and then make the distinction. If a monk who is being reproached wants to distinguish the monk who is reproaching, he should keep five dharmas in mind and then make the distinction. What are the five? That others reproach me, is it a true reproach or not true? Is it a timely reproach or not untimely? Is it a meaningful reproach or not meaningless? Is it a reproach with gentle words or not harsh? Is it a reproach with loving-kindness or not with hatred? Thinking, 'Where else could I find such a reproach from others?' Therefore, if a monk who is being reproached wants to distinguish the monk who is reproaching, he should keep these five dharmas in mind and say these words to the monk who is reproaching: 'Hey, venerable reproacher, please know and tell me. Venerable one, please open me. Venerable one, please reproach me. Venerable one, what will you say after you have distinguished me? How will you admonish me? How will you reproach me? How will you remember me? For what reason should I be distinguished? Is it a defeat among offenses? Is it a Sanghavasesa? Is it a Patita?'

What should be said from the individual confessions? Among the transgressions, are they from defeat (Parajika)? Are they from the remainder of the Sangha (Sanghavasesa)? Are they from downfall (Patayantika)? Are they from individual confession (Pratidesaniya)? Are they from the precepts (Siksa)? Distinctions should be made. What should be confessed? What should be restrained? What transgresses the Vinaya? What arises from evil speech? What arises from manifest conduct? How should the transgressions of these be distinguished? What have I seen? What have I heard? What have I doubted? What are the transgressions of body? What are the transgressions of speech? What manifest conduct of mine should I speak of? What heavy transgression of mine? What light transgression? What transgression with remainder? What transgression without remainder? What transgression that transcends all? What fault of mine should I speak of? Has the discipline been broken? Has the view been broken? Has the conduct been broken? Has the livelihood been broken? Has everything been broken? What brokenness should I speak of? Walking, standing, sitting, lying down, not lying down, from which conduct should I speak? What was done in the city? What was done in the monastery? What was done on the road? What was done on the wrong path? What was done at night? What was done during the day? Speak of what I have done. The monk who is being admonished should have the monk who is admonishing him distinguish the situation in these five ways, and then allow him to take a vow, saying these words: The admonisher should say, "Speak of the transgression of how you took the vow." In short: Fear and confusion, the Brahma penalty without service, the threatening penalty is obvious, and the truths are likewise. When the monk being admonished has distinguished the situation, the monk who is admonishing him should have confidence in five points: "Venerable one, do not fear! Do not be afraid. Do not be frightened. Do not always be frightened! Do not always be frightened! Do not be alarmed! Do not be alarmed! Do not be hesitant! Do not be hesitant!" The monk who is admonishing should also give confidence to the monk who is being admonished in five other points: "Venerable one, I do not hold onto your confusion! I do not hold onto your alarm, Venerable one, I hold onto your steadfastness!" Venerable one, he should be placed in a vow up to three times. The monk who is being admonished should also give confidence to the monk who is admonishing him in five other points. That is, Venerable one
