If one prepares for full ordination and listens when one is being fully ordained, what happens? A transgression occurs. If one prepares when one is being fully ordained and listens when one is being fully ordained, what happens? An offense. If one prepares when one is being fully ordained and listens when one is not being fully ordained, what happens? A transgression occurs. Venerables, if a monk listens without saying anything when householders are fighting, what happens? A transgression occurs. Similarly, with regard to hermaphrodites, nuns who have been expelled, those who have killed their father, those who have killed their mother, those who have killed an arhat, those who have intentionally drawn blood from a Tathagata, non-Buddhists, those who have become non-Buddhists, thieves' dwellings, those who do not dwell, those who dwell separately, those who have previously committed offenses, those who have previously quarreled, if one listens and remains without saying anything, all will become transgressions. Venerables, if a monk listens without saying anything to a schism in the Sangha, what happens? An offense. If one listens without saying anything to those who are approaching and those who are requesting instruction, what happens? All will become offenses. Venerables, if a monk listens without saying anything to nuns, female trainees, female novices, and male novices, what happens? All will become transgressions. Venerables, if monks are fighting and one listens without saying anything, is there no fault even if one listens? Upali, there is. That is, the monk listens thinking that he will pacify them. Venerables, if one who is requesting instruction listens without saying anything, what happens? An offense. Venerables, if a nun listens without saying anything, what happens? An offense.
