If one lies down, what happens? It's a transgression. Venerable one, if a monk sits on a bed or a small bed, and if the bed legs have nails, and then presses down with weight, is it okay? Is there a situation where lying down does not result in a downfall? Upali, there is. That is, for example, if the top of a monastery is covered with thatch, or any place, sitting or lying down on it, there is no fault. Venerable one, if someone who has received precepts sits on a bed or a small bed without nails in the upper story of a house, and then presses down with weight, if one lies down, what happens? It's a downfall. If a nun presses down with weight, if one lies down, what happens? It's a downfall. Novice nuns, postulants, and novices, if they press down with weight, if they lie down, what happens? It's a transgression. If grass, earth, or cow dung is watered with water containing living creatures, it's a downfall. What is said in this way should also be explained in detail according to the teachings. In short, letters, messages, gestures, what others say, and from one to another, madmen, those with mental confusion, the deaf, and those who walk. Venerable Upali asked the Blessed One, the Buddha. Venerable one, the Blessed One said that if a monk builds a large monastery, alternating mud and bricks, build two or three stories. If one builds more than that, it will result in a downfall. Venerable one, if a monk builds more than two or three stories with a message, what happens? It's a transgression. Similarly, letters, gestures, what others say, and passing from one to another, all result in transgressions. Venerable one, if a mad monk builds more than two or three stories, what happens? It's a transgression. Similarly, if those with mental confusion, those afflicted by illness, the foolish, the mute, the deaf, and those who live elsewhere are allowed to build, what happens? All result in transgressions.

(The Venerable asked:) If a Bhikshu builds a personal temple and builds excessively, what happens? Answer: He commits a sin. (The Venerable asked:) When a Bhikshu is building a temple for the Sangha, is there a case where he can build more than two or three stories without incurring a downfall? Upali replied: Yes, there is. That is, if the temple is built entirely of stone, or if the donor says, "I will look after the donation is completed," then there is no fault. (The Venerable asked:) If a Bhikshu makes what others have built, two or three stories, look like something built by others, what happens? Answer: He commits a sin. (The Venerable asked:) If a Bhikshu mixes mud and bricks and builds more than two or three stories, but does not make it look like something built by others, what happens? Answer: He commits a sin. The same is true for someone who is mentally disturbed or has passed away. (The Venerable asked:) If a Bhikshu mixes mud and bricks and builds more than two or three stories, and then changes his status to become a Bhikshuni and makes it look like something built by others, what happens? Answer: He commits a downfall. (The Venerable asked:) If a Bhikshuni mixes mud and bricks and builds more than two or three stories, and then changes her status to become a Bhikshu and makes it look like something built by others, what happens?
