If permission is given to expel them, all of them will commit an offense. Monks, does a bhikṣu expel a bhikṣu who has caused dissension in the saṃgha, an adherent, or one who has given instruction? If permission is given to expel them, what happens? All of them will incur a downfall. Monks, if a bhikṣu openly gives permission to expel a householder, what happens? It is a downfall. Mother, and killing an Arhat, and drawing blood from the Tathagata with malicious intent, and a heretic, and becoming a heretic, and a place of theft, and dwelling separately, and not dwelling, and previously quarreling, and previously having committed a fault, and approaching, and teaching the precepts, and a Bhikshuni, and a Śikṣamāṇā, and a Śrāmaṇerikā, and a Śrāmaṇera being expelled, what will happen? It is a downfall. Monks, does a Bhikshuni expel a Bhikshuni? If she expels, what will happen? It is a downfall. Monks, Does a Bhikshuni expel a Śikṣamāṇā and a Śrāmaṇerikā and Śrāmaṇeras? If she expels, what will happen? It is a misdeed. Monks, does one who teaches the precepts expel a Bhikshuni? If she expels, what will happen? It is a downfall. It is a misdeed towards Bhikshunis and Śrāmaṇerikās and Śrāmaṇeras. In short, madness, mental disturbance, illness, deafness, foolishness, sleep, and drunkenness, unconsciousness, and entering into samadhi, are the final destinations. The venerable Upali asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: Monks, the Blessed One said that if any monk exists later to a monk who existed earlier, and greatly harms or lies down, it is a downfall. Monks, if a monk greatly harms or lies down to a mad monk, what will happen? It is a misdeed. Similarly, to those who are mentally disturbed, and those who are afflicted by disease, and the foolish, and the mute, and the deaf, and those who are sleeping, and those who are drunk, and those who are unconscious, and those who have entered into samadhi, and those who dwell in other places, if one greatly harms or lies down, what will happen? It is a misdeed. In short, for individuals and for the Sangha, and like names and the fourth, and householders and so on, unsuitability is the final. Monks, if a monk greatly harms or lies down to monks who existed earlier in an individual's monastery, what will happen? It is a misdeed. Monks, if a monk greatly harms or lies down to monks who existed earlier in a place other than the Sangha's monastery, what will happen?
