What will happen? Committed an offense. Preparing to receive full ordination, if it is accomplished after receiving full ordination, what will happen? Committed an offense. Preparing at the time of receiving full ordination, if it is accomplished at the time of receiving full ordination, what will happen? A downfall. Preparing at the time of receiving full ordination, if it is accomplished when not having received full ordination, what will happen? Committed an offense. Monks, if a bhikshu speaks of his own misdeeds of evil conduct to someone who has not received full ordination, what will happen? Committed an offense. If a bhikshu speaks of the misdeeds of evil conduct of a bhikshu to a prostitute, what will happen? Committed an offense. Similarly, if he speaks to eunuchs and female eunuchs, and to hermaphrodites, all are committed offenses. If a bhikshu speaks of the misdeeds of evil conduct of a bhikshu by slandering a bhikshuni, what will happen? A downfall. Similarly, if he speaks to those who have killed their father and mother, and to those who have killed an arhat, and to those who have drawn blood from the Tathagata with malicious intent, and to heretics, and to those who have become heretics, and to thieves' places, and to those who do not dwell, and to those who dwell separately, and to those who have previously quarreled, and to those who have previously committed offenses, all will fall down. If a bhikshu speaks of the misdeeds of evil conduct of a bhikshu to those who have caused division in the Sangha, and to those who are close, and to the bhikshus and bhikshunis who have given precepts, all will be committed offenses. If he speaks to the shramanerika and the shramana, and to the shramanerika's fathers, all will fall down. If a bhikshuni speaks of the misdeeds of evil conduct of a bhikshuni to someone who has not received full ordination, what will happen? A downfall. If a bhikshu speaks to a bhikshuni, what will happen? Committed an offense. If he speaks to the shramanerika and the shramana, and to the shramanerika's fathers, all will fall down. Monks, if one who gives precepts speaks of misdeeds of evil conduct to someone who has not received full ordination, what will happen? A downfall. Similarly, to the shramanerika and the shramana, and to the shramanerika's fathers, all should be explained in detail as committed offenses. The Buddha is the teacher. Apart from saying these, if one correctly proclaims the Dharma that is higher than humans, then it is distinguished in order from the defeats spoken of by the Father. In short, sending messages, letters, gestures, and speaking of others, and from one to another, becoming mad and mentally disturbed.

The dumb, the sick, the deaf, the foolish, and those who are asleep, mad, drunk, and those who are in meditative absorption and those who are in other states. The Venerable Upali asked the Blessed One: Venerable, the Blessed One has said that if a monk, having previously agreed, later says: Venerable, the offerings of the Sangha should be given to such a dear person. Would that be a transgression? The Blessed One said: Venerable, if a monk says through a messenger: Venerable, the offerings of the Sangha should be given to such a dear person. What would happen? A minor offense. Similarly, sending letters, gestures, having others convey, and passing from one person to another, all would be minor offenses. Venerable, if a monk says to a madman: Venerable, the offerings of the Sangha should be given to such a dear person. What would happen? A minor offense. Similarly, to those who are mentally disturbed, afflicted by illness, foolish, stuttering, deaf, asleep, drunk, in meditative absorption, and those who are in other states, if it is said: Venerable, the offerings of the Sangha should be given to such a dear person. Then, all of these would be minor offenses. In short, language, body, and concealment, and names and the fourth, the seventh, and householders, unsuitable persons, young persons, and the last offering and nuns. Venerable, if a noble monk says to a monk in the noble language: Venerable, the offerings of the Sangha should be given to such a dear person. And if that monk does not understand the noble language, what would happen? A minor offense. If a noble person says to a monk in the language of the borderlands: Venerable, the offerings of the Sangha should be given to such a dear person. And if that monk does not understand the language of the borderlands, what would happen? A minor offense.
