Bhikshu, if a noble bhikshu, in the language of the noble ones, together with a servant from the borderlands, preaches the Dharma to a woman beyond five or six sentences, and that servant does not understand the language of the noble ones, what happens? No offense. Bhikshu, if a bhikshu, perceiving a human woman as a human woman, preaches the Dharma with more than five or six words, what happens? He commits a downfall. If he perceives a human as non-human, he commits an offense. If he perceives a non-human as human, he commits an offense. If he perceives a non-human as non-human, he commits an offense. Bhikshu, if a bhikshu, perceiving a servant as human, preaches the Dharma to a woman, what happens? No offense. If he perceives a human as non-human and preaches the Dharma, what happens? He commits an offense. If he perceives a non-human as human and preaches the Dharma, what happens? No offense. If he perceives a non-human as non-human and preaches, what happens? He commits an offense. Bhikshu, if one who gives instruction preaches the Dharma to a woman with more than five or six words, what happens? He commits a downfall. Bhikshu, if a bhikshuni preaches the Dharma to a man with more than five or six words, what happens? She commits a downfall. For shramanerikas, shikshamanas, and shramaneras, it should be explained in detail that they commit an offense. In short: madness and mental disturbance, sickness, deafness, wandering, and householders, as well as words and names, apply similarly to bhikshunis. The venerable Upali asked the Buddha, the Bhagavan: Bhikshu, the Bhagavan said that if a bhikshu recites the Dharma together with someone who has not taken full ordination, he commits a downfall. Bhikshu, if a bhikshu recites the Dharma together with a madman, what happens? He commits an offense. Similarly, reciting the Dharma together with those who are mentally disturbed, afflicted by illness, foolish, stuttering, deaf, and those who dwell in other places, all result in offenses. Bhikshu, if a bhikshu recites the Dharma together with a householder, what happens? He commits a downfall. Reciting the Dharma together with eunuchs and hermaphrodites, what happens? He commits a downfall. Bhikshu, if a bhikshu recites the Dharma together with an expelled bhikshuni, a father, a mother, one who has killed an arhat, one who has maliciously drawn blood from the Tathagata, a heretic, one who has become a heretic, a thief, one who lives separately, one who has previously committed an offense, and those who have previously quarreled.
