Knowingly causing a sentient being that has become an animal to lose its life is distinguished as explained in the case of the root downfall. In short, letters, written messages, gestures, what others say, and from one to another, a madman, a mentally disturbed person, a sick person, a deaf person, a fool, a sleeping person, a drunk person, an intoxicated person, and absorption are the final methods. The venerable Upali asked the Blessed One Buddha. Venerable, the Blessed One said that if a monk knowingly causes a monk to feel remorse, it will be a downfall. Venerable, if a monk causes a monk to feel remorse through a letter, what happens? A transgression is committed. Similarly, causing remorse through letters, gestures, what others say, and passing it from one to another, all are transgressions.
