Bhikshu, if a bhikshu speaks of a bhikshu's offense of misconduct to a householder, is that called concealment? Upali, it is not. Similarly, if one speaks of it to a eunuch, a hermaphrodite, or one who has taken vows, is that called concealment? Upali, it is not. Bhikshu, if a bhikshu conceals the offense of misconduct of a bhikshuni, and of a śrāmaṇerikā, a bhikshuni, and a śrāmaṇera, what will happen? It will be a minor offense. Bhikshuni, if a bhikshuni conceals the offense of misconduct of a bhikshu, a śrāmaṇerikā, a bhikshuni, and a śrāmaṇera, what will happen? It will be a minor offense. Bhikshu, if one who has taken vows conceals an offense of misconduct, what will happen? It will be a downfall. A madman, a disturbed mind, a sick person, a deaf person, a fool, a sleeping person, a drunkard, a delirious person, one in meditative absorption is the last. The venerable Upali asked the Buddha, the Bhagavan: Bhikshu, Blessed One, if a bhikshu says to a bhikshu: Desiring to deprive you of food, venerable one, you, whether you speak or associate with me, will not be happy, go away. Having said this, if the bhikshu causes that bhikshu to be deprived of food even for a moment, he will fall. Monk, if a noble monk deprives someone of food in the language of the noble, and that monk does not understand the language of the noble, what will happen? It is a misdeed. If a noble person deprives someone of food in the language of a border region, and that monk does not understand the language of the border region, what will happen? It is a misdeed. If a person from a border region deprives someone of food in the language of a border region, and that monk does not understand the language of the border region, what will happen? It is a misdeed. Monk, if a monk deprives another monk of food by focusing on the body, what will happen? It is a misdeed. Monk, if a monk deprives someone of food by perceiving a solitary place as a non-solitary place, what will happen? It is a misdeed. Monk, if a monk allows another monk to be deprived of food, what will happen? It is a misdeed. Monk, if a monk deprives someone of food for the sake of another, what will happen? It is a misdeed. Monk, if a monk, while depriving another monk of food, undergoes a change of gender and becomes a nun, what will happen? It is a misdeed. Nun, if a nun, while depriving another nun of food, undergoes a change of gender and becomes a monk, what will happen? It is a misdeed. Monk, if a monk deprives a layperson of food, what will happen? It is a misdeed. Similarly, eunuchs, hermaphrodites, expelled nuns, parricides, matricides, arhat-slayers, those who maliciously draw blood from the Tathagata, heretics, those who have become heretics, thieves' dwellings, non-dwellings, separate dwellings, those who have previously committed offenses, those who have previously quarreled, if deprived of food, all will become misdeeds. Monk, if a monk causes dissension in the Sangha, those who are close, and those who give precepts, if deprived of food, what will happen? All will fall.
