Monks, if a monk, thinking the other person is fully ordained, strikes them, what happens? He commits a downfall. If he thinks the other person is not fully ordained, what happens? He commits a minor offense. If he thinks someone not fully ordained is fully ordained, what happens? He commits a minor offense. Monks, if he prepares to strike when the other is not fully ordained, and strikes when the other is not fully ordained, what happens? He commits a minor offense. Monks, if a monk strikes someone who has caused division in the Sangha, someone who is approaching, someone who is giving instruction, what happens? All result in a downfall. Monks, if a monk strikes a monk, and the gender changes to become a nun, what happens? He commits a minor offense. Monks, if a nun strikes a nun, and the gender changes to become a monk, what happens?

Urna: What happens? An offense is committed. Bhikshu, if a bhikshu strikes a bhikshuni, a śikṣamāṇā, a śrāmaṇerikā, or a śrāmaṇera, what happens? An offense is committed. Bhikshu, if a bhikshuni strikes a bhikshu, a śikṣamāṇā, a śrāmaṇerikā, or a śrāmaṇera, what happens? An offense is committed. Bhikshu, if one who has bestowed vows strikes a bhikshu, what happens? It is a downfall. Bhikshu, if a bhikshuni strikes a bhikshuni, what happens? It is a downfall. A śikṣamāṇā, a śrāmaṇerikā, and a śrāmaṇera commit an offense. Just as the chapter on striking has been spoken, so too should the intention to strike be spoken. In brief: messages, letters, gestures, and the words of others, one to another, madness, mental disturbance, illness, deafness, foolishness, sleep, intoxication, unconsciousness, absorption, and the final wanderer. The venerable Upāli asked the Buddha, the Bhagavan: Bhikshu, the Bhagavan said: If a bhikshu conceals the offense of a bhikshu's downfall, it is a downfall. Bhikshu, if a bhikshu conceals the offense of a bhikshu's downfall with a letter, what happens? An offense is committed. Likewise, through letters, gestures, the words of others, passing from one to another, concealing the offense of a downfall, all will commit an offense. Bhikshu, if a bhikshu conceals the offense of a bhikshu's downfall from a madman, an offense is committed. Likewise, for those who are mentally disturbed, afflicted by illness, foolish, mute, deaf, sleeping, intoxicated, unconscious, absorbed, and those who dwell as other wanderers, if they conceal the offense of a bhikshu's downfall, all will commit an offense. Bhikshu, if a śikṣamāṇā conceals the offense of a downfall from a mad bhikshu, what happens? An offense is committed. Likewise, for bhikshus who are mentally disturbed, afflicted by illness, foolish, mute, deaf, sleeping, intoxicated, unconscious, absorbed, and those who dwell as other wanderers, if they conceal the offense of a downfall, all will commit an offense. In brief: speech, body, and solitude.
