O Bhikshu of the earth. If asked, "Are you a heretic?" and he acknowledges it by not speaking, what happens? He commits a misdeed. Venerable one. If a Bhikshu lies and his status changes to become a Bhikshuni, what happens? He will fall. Venerable one. If a Bhikshuni lies and her status changes to become a Bhikshu, what happens? She falls. Venerable one. If one who has not taken full ordination prepares to lie and speaks without having taken full ordination, what happens? He commits a misdeed. If one prepares without having taken full ordination and speaks when taking full ordination, what happens? He commits a misdeed. If one prepares without having taken full ordination and speaks after taking full ordination, what happens? He commits a misdeed. If one prepares when taking full ordination and speaks when taking full ordination, what happens? He commits a misdeed. If one prepares when taking full ordination and speaks after taking full ordination, what happens? He commits a misdeed. If one prepares after taking full ordination and speaks after taking full ordination, what happens? He falls. If one prepares after taking full ordination and speaks without having taken full ordination, what happens? He commits a misdeed. Venerable one. If a Bhikshu asks another Bhikshu, "Did you see this thing called so-and-so?" and that person has not seen it, but says, "I saw it" with the intention of his body, what happens? He commits a misdeed. Venerable one. If one lies after giving precepts, what happens? He will fall. Venerable one. If a Bhikshuni lies, what happens? She falls. For Shramaneras and Shramanerikas, and Shramana fathers, there is a misdeed. In short, oral messages, letters, gestures, and what others say, and from one to another, becoming mad and mentally disturbed, being sick, deaf, dumb, foolish, sleeping, drunk, intoxicated, and the last one being in a state of absorption. The Blessed One Buddha was asked by the venerable Upali. Venerable one. The Blessed One said, "If one speaks of the faults of a person, he will fall." Venerable one. If a Bhikshu speaks words of a person's faults through an oral message, what happens? He commits a misdeed. Just as with an oral message, so too with letters, gestures, and what others say, and all transmissions from one to another will result in a misdeed. Venerable one. If a Bhikshu speaks words of a person's faults to a madman, what happens? He commits a misdeed. Similarly, to a mentally disturbed person
