If a monk takes clothes from (another) monk, and that monk also changes gender and takes from a nun, what happens? He commits a misdeed. If he takes from a female novice or a female trainee, what happens? He commits a misdeed. If a nun takes from a monk or a male novice, what happens? She commits a misdeed. Similarly, taking from a female novice or a female trainee also results in a misdeed. If a male novice takes from a nun, a female novice, or a female trainee, it also results in a misdeed. In short, letters, written messages, gestures, what others say, and passing (information) from one to another, becoming insane, mentally disturbed, sick, deaf, foolish, sleeping, drunk, intoxicated, and outsiders. Venerables. Venerables. The Blessed One also said that if a monk begs for clothes from a householder who is not a relative or from the householder's storeroom, it will lead to downfall. So, is there a situation where a monk begs for clothes from a householder or the householder's storeroom but does not lead to downfall? Upali. Yes, there is. In any case, if he begs through a letter, he will commit a misdeed, and even if he obtains it, it is just a misdeed. Similarly, letters, gestures, what others say, and passing from one to another, all of these will result in misdeeds. Venerables. If a monk begs from an insane householder and obtains clothes, what happens? He commits a misdeed. Similarly, if he begs and obtains clothes from those who are mentally disturbed, afflicted by illness, deaf, foolish, mute, sleeping, drunk, intoxicated, and those who reside elsewhere, what happens? He commits a misdeed. In short, the second and seventh of the four unsuitable things are also the same. Like a prostitute, like a female hermaphrodite. Like a hermaphrodite monk. Venerables. Is there a situation where a monk begs for clothes from the storeroom of a householder who is not a relative but does not lead to downfall? Upali. Yes, there is. In any case, if the material of that cloth is suitable but the yarn is unsuitable, or the yarn is suitable but the material is unsuitable, or both are unsuitable. What is unsuitable is: mixed with goat wool, sheep wool, cow hair, deer hair, and those that are not woven. If he begs for such clothes and obtains them, he commits a misdeed. Venerables.
