Venerable, if those are stolen by four or more monks, what will happen? It will become a grave offense. If they are divided separately, and each one receives five mashakas, then they will be expelled. Venerable, how many kinds of stealing are there? Near one, there are six: stealing without giving, stealing by force, stealing offerings, stealing sealed items, stealing thoroughly inspected items, and stealing the Dharma. Venerable, among these six kinds of stealing spoken of by the Blessed One, which one leads to expulsion? Near one, all except stealing the Dharma lead to expulsion. Venerable, what is the meaning of the Blessed One's saying that stealing five mashakas leads to expulsion? Venerable, if a monk steals three mashakas, will he also be expelled? Yes, near one, if three mashakas can be exchanged for one karshapana. Venerable, if a monk steals five mashakas, will he not be expelled? Yes, if ten or more mashakas can be exchanged for one karshapana. Venerable, what is the meaning of the Blessed One's saying that stealing five mashakas leads to expulsion? What kind of five mashakas, when stolen, lead to expulsion? Those for which twenty mashakas can be exchanged for one nanaka. What kind of mashaka can be exchanged for a kaka? Four can be exchanged. What kind of karshapana? One made by King Maurya. Venerable, what is the meaning of the Blessed One's saying that stealing five mashakas leads to expulsion? Venerable, if a monk steals a thousand karshapanas, will he not be expelled? Yes, if he steals thinking it is lost. Venerable, what is the meaning of the Blessed One's saying that stealing five mashakas leads to expulsion? If a monk steals five mashakas, will he not be expelled? Yes, if he steals one at a time, or two at a time, or three at a time, or four at a time, but never five at once. Venerable, if a monk takes a large item, thinking it is his own, and hides it with the intention of stealing, what will happen? He will be expelled. If that monk takes it with the intention of stealing, but hides it thinking it is his own, what will happen? He will commit a grave offense.
