Then, if that bhikṣu, not having been previously informed, becomes aware of certain thoughts, and for the sake of goodness, goes to a householder or a householder's wife who is not a relative, and says this: 'O long-lived one, for my sake, with the value of the robes that have been collected, please buy such and such a weaving of robes, and make a suitable robe for me in due time.' If the robe is completed, it is an offense entailing forfeiture. What was said? Venerable one, if a bhikṣu, acting as a messenger, becomes aware of thoughts from a householder or a householder's female attendant who is not a relative, and begs for a robe, what will happen? He commits a misdeed. If he obtains the robe, what will happen? It is only a misdeed. Similarly, through writing, gestures, blaming others, or transmitting messages, what will happen? He commits a misdeed. Venerable one, if a bhikṣu, from a householder or a householder's female attendant who is not a relative, becomes aware of thoughts from a madman and begs for a robe, what will happen? He commits a misdeed. If he obtains the robe, what will happen? It is only a misdeed. Similarly, for those who are mentally disturbed, those tormented by feelings, the deaf, the foolish, those who are sleeping, those who are idle, those who are extremely drunk, those who are in meditative absorption, and other non-Buddhists, ascetics, Brahmins, practitioners, and wanderers, if he becomes aware of thoughts and begs for a robe, what will happen? He commits a misdeed. If he obtains the robe, what will happen? It is only a misdeed. The summary says: 'Unsuitable and two sets of four, similarly also those who have changed sex, eunuchs, women themselves, and eunuchs and bhikṣus themselves.' Venerable one, is it the case that a bhikṣu, from a householder or a householder's female attendant who is not a relative, becomes aware of thoughts and begs for a robe, and even if he obtains it, he will not commit an offense entailing forfeiture? Ānanda, yes, there is such a case. Like this, the type of that robe is suitable, but the material is unsuitable; or the material is suitable, but the type is unsuitable; or both are unsuitable. The unsuitable are: hemp, cow hair, animal hair, mixed with sheep's wool, and unsewn. Such a ro
