The Blessed One has long been precious and dear to us. Since he has passed into complete Nirvana near your city, please give us a share of the relics of the Blessed One. We will build a stupa for the relics of the Blessed One in the sinful land, and erect umbrellas, banners, and streamers, and honor, venerate, depict, and make offerings with incense, garlands, incense, powders, and the sound of music. After making offerings, we will also hold a great festival." The inhabitants said, "The Blessed One is also precious and dear to us, and since he passed away near our city, we will not give you a share of the relics of the Blessed One. If we give it, that would be good. If we do not give it, we will seize it with the army!" The giants of Kushinagar listened and replied, "So be it!" The Shakyas of Bulaka, who lived in the land of Shifting Thought, the Shakyas of Krodha, who lived in the city of Noise, the Brahmins who lived in the Extensive Region, the Shakyas of the Shakya clan who lived in Kapilavastu, and the Licchavis of the Shakya clan who lived in Vaishali, also heard of this. King Ajatashatru, the son of Vaidehi, the king of Magadha, also heard that the Blessed One had passed into complete Nirvana, and that the giants of the sinful land, the Shakyas of Bulaka who lived in the land of Shifting Thought, the Shakyas of Krodha who lived in the city of Noise, the Brahmins who lived in the Extensive Region, the Shakyas of the Shakya clan who lived in Kapilavastu, and the Licchavis of the Shakya clan who lived in Vaishali, were assembling armies.
