They said to them, "O knowledgeable ones, let us abandon our human musical instruments. Let us honor, respect, revere, depict, and make offerings with divine fragrances, garlands, incense, powders, and musical sounds. Let us enter and abide near the stupa adorned with a headdress by giants, from the western gate of Grass City to the eastern gate of Grass City, crossing the Wealth River." They said this. Vinayavastu-ksudraka. Volume Fifty-Six. Then, the giants of Grass City abandoned their human musical instruments and honored, respected, revered, depicted, and made offerings with divine fragrances, garlands, incense, powders, and musical sounds. They entered the central avenue from the western gate of Grass City, reached the eastern gate of Grass City, crossed the Wealth River, and abided near the stupa adorned with a headdress by giants. At that time, many divine Mandarava flowers fell in Grass City, reaching about knee-deep. At that time, another person took many of those divine Mandarava flowers and went to the Land of Sin for some purpose. At that time, the Venerable Mahakashyapa, accompanied by five hundred followers, set out on the road from the Land of Sin to Grass City, desiring to pay homage to the undiminished relics of the Blessed One. The Venerable Mahakashyapa saw that person on the road. Having seen him, he said to that person, "Venerable person, where are you coming from? Where are you going?" "Venerable Mahakashyapa, I am coming from Grass City and going to the Land of Sin for some purpose." "Venerable person, do you know my teacher?" "O Noble One, I know him. He is the monk Gautama." "O Noble Mahakashyapa, that teacher has passed away seven years ago, and these are the divine Mandarava flowers that I have taken to offer to his relics." At that time, another old man, in an improper manner,

Saying these words: Thus, I am like this with regret and old age, alas, monks, this is what should be done. This is not what should not be done, liberated from saying this. Now we will do what we can, and what we cannot do, we will not do, saying such unreasonable words, obscured by the gods dwelling in the sky. How is it that, apart from the venerable Mahakashyapa, not a single one of the monastic community heard it. Then, the venerable Mahakashyapa, speaking such improper words, deviated from the path for the sake of taming. In the midst of the monastic community, he sat down on the prepared seat. Having sat down, the venerable Mahakashyapa said to the monks: Venerable ones, all compounded things are impermanent, unstable, unreliable, and subject to change. Thus, one should become disillusioned with all compounded things and attain liberation. Venerable ones, I will quickly go to see the unblemished body of the Blessed One. Then, the giants of the city of Kushinagar wrapped the body of the Blessed One with cotton cloth. After wrapping it with cotton cloth, they wrapped it with five hundred pairs of cloth. After wrapping it with five hundred pairs of cloth, they placed it in an iron coffin and filled it with sesame oil. After placing it in an iron coffin and filling it with sesame oil, they covered it with two iron lids from above. They piled up all the fragrant wood, wanting to light the fire, but they could not light it. Then, the venerable Aniruddha said to the venerable Ananda: Venerable Ananda, the giants of the city of Kushinagar are unable to cremate the body of the Blessed One. What is the reason for this? It is the thought of the gods. Venerable Aniruddha, how do the gods think? Thus, the venerable Mahakashyapa, leading five hundred followers, is on the way from the sinful land to the city of Kushinagar, and is going to pay homage to the unblemished body of the Blessed One. Venerable Aniruddha, how do the gods think?

It should be done like that. Then, the venerable Ānanda said to the giants of Kushinagar: "O wise and established ones, assembled and gathered, listen! The reason why the Blessed One's body could not be cremated is because the gods have thought about it. Venerable Ānanda, what have the gods thought? It is because the venerable Mahākāśyapa, with five hundred attendants, is on his way from the land of sinners to Kushinagar, and is going to pay homage to the Blessed One's uncorrupted body." They said: "Venerable Ānanda, let us do as the gods have thought." Then, when the venerable Mahākāśyapa arrived in Kushinagar, the attendants saw the venerable Mahākāśyapa from afar. Having seen him, they took incense, garlands, perfumes, powders, and musical instruments, and went to where the venerable Mahākāśyapa was. Having arrived, they bowed their heads at the feet of the venerable Mahākāśyapa, and followed behind him. The venerable Mahākāśyapa, with hundreds of thousands of attendants, thousands of thousands of attendants, and hundreds of thousands of attendants, went to where the Blessed One was. Having arrived, they removed all the fragrant trees. Having removed all the fragrant trees, they opened the iron box. Having opened the iron box, they removed five hundred layers of fine cloth. Having removed five hundred layers of fine cloth, they also removed the cotton shroud. Having removed the cotton shroud, they paid homage to the Blessed One's uncorrupted body. At that time, there were four great Śrāvakas on this great earth: the venerable Ajñāta Kauṇḍinya, the venerable Mahākāśyapa, the venerable Daśabala Kāśyapa, and the venerable Mahākāśyapa. Among them, the venerable Mahākāśyapa was endowed with wisdom, had great merit, and was able to obtain robes, alms, bedding, medicine, and provisions. Then, the venerable Mahākā
