Did. So. Then, the chief giants of the city of Kushinagar said this to the Venerable Ananda: "Venerable Ananda, how should we make offerings to the body of the Blessed One, and how should we strive? The arrangement is like the treatment of a Universal Monarch." Venerable Ananda, how is a Universal Monarch treated? The arrangement is that for a Universal Monarch, the body is wrapped with cotton cloth, and after wrapping with cotton cloth, it is wrapped with five hundred layers of fine cloth. After wrapping with five hundred layers of fine cloth, it is placed in an iron coffin, filled with clarified butter, and covered with two iron lids from above. All fragrant woods are piled up, and it is burned with that. The fire is extinguished with milk, and its bones are placed in a golden vase. A stupa of bones is built at the crossroads of the main road, and umbrellas, victory banners, and flags are erected. It is honored, respected, worshipped, painted, and offered with incense, garlands, perfumes, powders, and the sound of music, and a great festival is also held. The arrangement is that just as it is done for a Universal Monarch, it should be done even more for the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened Buddha." As we understand the meaning of what Venerable Ananda said, because it is difficult for us to gather people with one, two, or three umbrellas, within seven days we should gather in that way, and honor, respect, worship, paint, and offer the Blessed One who is resting on the lion throne with incense, garlands, perfumes, powders, and the sound of music. Do it that way." Having heard from the Venerable Ananda, the giants of the city of Kushinagar gathered cotton cloth on the seventh day. After gathering cotton cloth, they also gathered five hundred layers of fine cloth. After gathering five hundred layers of fine cloth, they also prepared an iron coffin. After preparing the iron coffin, they also piled up all the fragrant woods. After piling up all the fragrant woods, they also prepared a golden vase.

Made preparations. Having prepared the golden vase, they also arranged the golden palanquin. After arranging the golden palanquin, from the city of Kushinagar to the river Hiranyavati, and from the grove of twin sala trees to the stupa adorned with a yaksha's headdress, for a distance of twelve yojanas, they proceeded from the city of Kushinagar with offerings such as incense, garlands, perfumes, powders, and musical instruments. Having gone to the grove of twin sala trees, they honored, revered, esteemed, and worshipped the one reclining on the lion throne with incense, garlands, perfumes, powders, and music. Furthermore, the chief yakshas of the city of Kushinagar spoke thus to the yakshas of the city of Kushinagar: "Listen, you learned inhabitants, to the many assembled yaksha retinues of the city of Kushinagar. Let the wives and daughters of the yakshas drape cloths over the Blessed One. Let the yakshas and young yakshas carry the Blessed One's golden palanquin. We shall honor, revere, esteem, and worship him with incense, garlands, perfumes, powders, and music. Having entered the central thoroughfare from the western gate of the city of Kushinagar, and having emerged from the eastern gate of the city of Kushinagar, having crossed the river Hiranyavati, we shall invite him to sit and abide near the stupa adorned with a yaksha's headdress." Then, the yakshas of the city of Kushinagar, having heard this, replied, "We shall do as you say." The wives and daughters of the yakshas draped umbrellas of cloth over the Blessed One. The yakshas and young yakshas, desiring to carry the Blessed One's palanquin, were unable to carry the Blessed One's palanquin. The venerable Ananda said to the venerable Ananda, "Venerable Ananda, the yakshas of the city of Kushinagar are unable to carry the Blessed One's palanquin." "Why is that?" "It is the will of the gods." "Venerable Ananda, what is the will of the gods?" "The gods wish that the wives and daughters of the yakshas should...

Covering with cloth canopies, the giants and young giants held the Blessed One's coffin, thinking, 'We will honor, revere, venerate, and make offerings with divine scents, garlands, incense, powders, and musical sounds, entering through the western gate of Kushinagar, exiting through the eastern gate of Kushinagar, crossing the river Hiranyavati, and placing it near the stupa adorned with giants' head ornaments.' Venerable Ananda, let it be done as the gods have thought. Then, Venerable Ananda said to the giants of Kushinagar, 'Wise ones, why can't you lift the Blessed One's coffin?' 'It is the thought of the gods.' 'Venerable Ananda, what have the gods thought?' The gods thought, 'Let the wives and daughters of the giants cover the Blessed One with cloth canopies, and let the giants and young giants lift the Blessed One's coffin. We will honor, revere, venerate, and make offerings with divine scents, garlands, incense, powders, and musical sounds, entering through the western gate of Kushinagar, exiting through the eastern gate of Kushinagar, crossing the river Hiranyavati, and placing it near the stupa adorned with giants' head ornaments.' Venerable Ananda, let it be done as the gods have thought. Then, the wives and daughters of the giants covered the Blessed One with cloth canopies, and the giants and young giants lifted the Blessed One's coffin. As soon as the coffin was lifted, the gods dwelling in the sky scattered divine utpala flowers, lotuses, white lotuses, kumuda flowers, agarwood powder, tamala powder, and divine mandara flowers, and played divine music, and scattered many clothes. Furthermore, the chief giants of Kushinagar
