At the midday of the fasting day, (they) said that the Blessed One Light Protector had entered Nirvana. Then, upon hearing the words of the Sorrowless Deva, he collapsed as if struck in a vital spot, and began to weep with a voice of compassion. Then, the deva asked, "Why do you weep?" Sorrowless replied, "Because I am separated from relatives and separated from the guru. The perfectly complete Buddha Light Protector is my uncle. I have not strived to practice diligently, so I have become an ordinary person, and the path is very long, so I cannot see him." The deva said, "Venerable one, if that is the case, if I were to lead you before the Blessed One, would you be able to discern any difference?" Sorrowless replied, "If the deva were to allow me to see the face of the Blessed One, my mind would be completely matured, and I would be able to discern the difference in that way." Then, the deva led Sorrowless before the Blessed One by means of miraculous power. Having seen the Blessed One, he generated faith. Having generated faith, the Blessed One Light Protector taught such a Dharma. As soon as he heard it, he immediately realized the state of an Arhat. First, the venerable Sorrowless passed into Nirvana. Then, the Blessed One, the perfectly complete Buddha Light Protector. After that, that deva saw that the venerable Sorrowless had passed into Nirvana, and having generated joy, he thought, "Whatever slight difference the venerable one has discerned depends on me. Therefore, in the future, when the Blessed One Light Protector says to the Brahmin boy, 'Brahmin boy, when the lifespan of beings is one hundred years, you will become the teacher Shakyamuni, the Thus-Gone One, the Arhat, the Perfectly Complete Buddha,' when he enters his final resting place, I will manifest before the last of his Shravaka disciples, and pass into Nirvana before the Blessed One. Then, I made the aspiration, may the Blessed One Shakyamuni pass into Nirvana." The Blessed One taught, "Monks, what do you think? That deva is this very Good Excellent. Monks, therefore, one should train in this way, for what reason

One should rely on virtuous spiritual friends, abide together with virtue, and rely on virtue. One should not rely on evil friends, not abide together with evil, and not rely on evil. Monks should train in this way. Then, the venerable Ananda said to the Blessed One, "Venerable sir, when I am alone in seclusion, dwelling in inner contemplation, such a thought arises in my mind: 'Namely, relying on virtuous spiritual friends, abiding together with virtue, and relying on virtue, not relying on evil friends, not abiding together with evil, and not relying on evil, this is half of the pure conduct.'" Ananda, you should not say, "Relying on virtuous spiritual friends, abiding together with virtue, and relying on virtue, not relying on evil friends, not abiding together with evil, and not relying on evil, this is half of the pure conduct." Why is that? Ananda, that is the pure conduct that is fully accomplished, unmixed, completely perfect, completely pure, and completely cleansed. Namely, relying on virtuous spiritual friends, abiding together with virtue, and relying on virtue, not relying on evil friends, not abiding together with evil friends, and one should not rely on evil friends. Ananda, why is that? By relying on virtuous spiritual friends, sentient beings who possess the nature of birth are liberated from the nature of birth. Aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, displeasure, and those who possess the nature of sentient disturbance are liberated from the nature of disturbance. Ananda, such categories should be known. What is the ultimate pure conduct, unmixed, completely perfect, and completely cleansed? Namely, relying on virtuous spiritual friends, abiding together with virtue, and relying on virtue, not relying on evil friends, not abiding together with evil, and one should not rely on evil. Ananda, you should do so.

It should be learned. Then, the Blessed One said to the monks: Monks, therefore, from now on, other non-Buddhist wanderers should not be ordained, nor should they receive full ordination, except for relatives of the Shakya clan and fire-haired ascetics. If relatives of the Shakya clan come bearing the marks of non-Buddhists, and if they wish to be ordained and fully ordained in the well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya, and to obtain the status of a monk, then the monks should ordain them and fully ordain them. Why is that? Monks, that is because it is a favor of kinship to our relatives. If other non-Buddhist wanderers come, and if they wish to be ordained and fully ordained in the well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya, and to obtain the status of a monk, then the monks should have their preceptor give them robes and keep them for four months. If they can serve with respect and satisfy the minds of the monks, then the monks should ordain them and fully ordain them. Monks, fire-haired ascetics should also be ordained and fully ordained. Monks, why is that? Because fire-haired ascetics speak of karma. Monks, fire-haired ascetics speak of the agent, speak of the cause, and speak of diligence. Therefore, monks, you should learn in this way: Whatever is said to be karma, is said to be the agent, is said to be the cause, and is said to be diligence, in that way, you monks should also learn. Therefore, monks, whatever Dharma is beneficial and brings happiness in this very life, and whatever is beneficial and brings happiness in future lives, the monks should embrace and fully understand. In whatever way it is embraced, held, and recited, in that way, the Brahmacharya will last long, and it will be beneficial to many beings, bring happiness to many beings, have compassion for the world, and be for the benefit and happiness of gods and humans. For example, the Sutra section, the section of verses, the section of prophecies, and the verses.
