If so, let's see if we can burn it with fire. They lit the fire and began to burn, but they couldn't light the fire. Then the monks said, 'Able ones, let us light the fire.' After they lit the fire, it blazed up. They sat there without saying a word. Then many people inflicted punishment. The giants of Kusha City were greatly amazed and developed great faith in the Blessed One. When the Blessed One was on his final bed, the feeling of joints breaking and bones separating became intense, and as he sat there, he placed Rab-bzang in the state of an Arhat. At that time, many giants of Kusha City were placed in the Dharma. The monks became doubtful and asked the Buddha, the Blessed One, who cuts off all doubts: 'Venerable One, when the Blessed One's joints were breaking and the feeling of bones separating became intense, the wanderer Rab-bzang was liberated from the ocean of Samsara, attained perfection, obtained ultimate bliss, and was placed in Nirvana.' The Blessed One said: 'Monks, just as I am now free from desire, free from hatred, free from delusion, free from birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and confusion, and have attained omniscience, all-knowing wisdom, and the wisdom of all knowledge, the wanderer Rab-bzang was liberated from the ocean of Samsara, attained perfection, obtained ultimate bliss, and was placed in Nirvana. What is so amazing about that? In the past, in a past life, I was full of desire, full of hatred, full of delusion, full of birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and confusion, not liberated from afflictions, not free from the ability to contemplate and destroy, born in the realm of animals, and without even regard for my own life, I sheltered the wanderer Rab-bzang and provided the giants of Kusha City with protection from death.'

Therefore, listen well and thoroughly, and keep it in mind, and I shall tell it. Bhikshus, in the past, in a past time, in a valley, there lived a leader of a deer herd, surrounded by thousands of deer. He was intelligent and clear, and his mind was compassionate. The hunter discovered the leader of the deer herd and told the king. Then, the king came with an army of four divisions and surrounded all the leaders of the deer herd. Then, the leader of the deer herd thought: If I do not protect these deer, they will all be destroyed. Then, the leader of the deer herd looked around for a direction in which the deer could escape. He saw a river flowing in the valley, and the current of the river was strong and rapid, and the deer were weak. Then, the leader quickly entered the river and stood in the middle, shouting, "Come here, all of you! From this side, put your feet on my back and go to the other side! There is no other way to survive, otherwise you will surely die." Then, the deer did as he said. Their hooves struck his back, tearing the skin, and flesh, blood, and bones were exposed, but he still did not give up his efforts. Then, all of them crossed over. When he saw that some had not crossed over, he felt compassion for them and looked back. He saw that a fawn had not crossed over. Then, the leader felt a severe pain as his joints broke and his bones separated. He provided refuge for the assembly at this riverbank, risking his life, and then carried the fawn on his back, rescued it from the river, and placed it on the bank. When he realized that many deer had crossed over, he began to make aspirations at the time of his death: Just as I have provided refuge for these deer and this fawn, risking my life, and have completely saved them from suffering, may I, through this, attain the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, and after becoming a Buddha, also liberate beings from the ocean of samsara, and accomplish all things.

May I accomplish ultimate happiness and be placed in the peace of Nirvana. The Blessed One said: Monks, what do you think? The leader of the deer herd at that time was me. Those deer were these giants of the Grass City. Which deer cub was this Rabzang (Good Excellent). Monks, furthermore, when I was tested and could not be destroyed, and was born in the animal realm, the feeling of joints being broken and bones being separated was just descending, while abiding, listen, the wanderer Rabzang (Good Excellent) took refuge. Monks, in the past, in the country of Varanasi, there was a king named Brahmadeva who was king, prosperous, flourishing, happy, with good harvests, people and many people, strife, contention, external aggression and wars were pacified, without thieves and diseases, rice, sugar cane, cattle and buffaloes were abundant, he was a righteous king, possessing Dharma, ruling the country according to Dharma, his horse named "Jangshe" (Good Knowledge) died, and the kings of the border states heard that King Brahmadeva's horse Jang
