Having meditated on the earth element, and having done so many times, one abandons all desires and craving for desires, and is born with an equal share in the world of Brahma. Ananda, the great king Good Vision experienced such a feeling at the time of his death, just as a strong man, having eaten good food, is immediately overwhelmed by the satisfaction brought by the food. Ananda, from the city of Kushinagar to the river Hiranyavati, and between the grove of twin Sala trees, and the stupa adorned with a headdress by giants, within these twelve yojanas, the body of the Tathagata, when acting as a Chakravartin king, has traveled six times. Ananda, there, the Tathagata has also become an Arhat, a perfectly enlightened Buddha, seven times. Ananda, I have not seen the body of the Tathagata appearing for the eighth time in the east, south, west, or north from that direction. Why is that? Because he has cut off the craving for existence, and the birth in samsara has ended, so there will be no other existence from this. At that time, the venerable Exemplar was sitting in front of the Blessed One. The Blessed One said to the venerable Exemplar, "Hey, Bhikshu, do not sit in front of me!" Then, the venerable Ananda said to the Blessed One, "Venerable, I have been serving as an attendant and close attendant for more than twenty years, and I have never heard you so harshly rebuke and belittle the venerable Exemplar." Ananda, the gods whose lives can last for hundreds of thousands of kalpas will think like this: The Tathagata, Arhat, perfectly enlightened Buddha, appears in the world as rarely as the Udumbara flower. And the Blessed One will also enter into complete Nirvana in the middle of the night tonight, in the realm without remainder. That Bhikshu, renowned for his great power, is also sitting in front of the Blessed One. He has turned his back on us, making it impossible for us to behold and serve the Blessed One.

They mockingly say "fool," they revile, they speak harsh words. O Venerable One, Blessed One, please tell me how many gods there are? Ananda, from the city of Kusha to the Dhanada River, and from the grove of twin Sala trees to the stupa adorned with a giant's headdress, within a radius of twelve yojanas, all the powerful and renowned gods are spread throughout, without the slightest gap, not even a space as small as a mustard seed. The monks, having doubts, and in order to dispel all doubts, asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: Venerable One, what is the reason? What deeds did the venerable Exemplar perform to become so renowned? The Blessed One said: Monks, the deeds done and accumulated by the monk Exemplar, which enable the attainment of virtuous deeds, the transformation of adverse circumstances, the abiding like a radiant light, and the avoidance of being devoured by demons, these are what the monk Exemplar has done and accumulated; how could anyone else bear them? Monks, the deeds done and accumulated will not ripen in the external earth element, will not ripen in the water element, will not ripen in the fire element, will not ripen in the wind element. Rather, the virtuous and non-virtuous deeds done and accumulated will ripen in the aggregates, elements, and sense bases that are grasped. Even after hundreds of thousands of kalpas, deeds will not be wasted; once the causes and conditions come together, they will manifest as fruits for sentient beings. Monks, in this very fortunate kalpa, when the lifespan of beings reaches twenty thousand years, a teacher named Light Protector, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Sugata, the Knower of the World, the Unsurpassed, the Tamer of Beings, the Teacher of Gods and Humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One, will appear in the world. He will reside near the Deer Park at Ṛṣipatana in the city of Vārāṇasī, and at that time he will go forth into his teachings. At some other time, it will be his turn to serve as the alms-arranger, and the monks, in the early morning, will put on their robes, take their bowls and Dharma robes, and go to Vārāṇasī for alms.

Having entered for tranquility, and in winter, untimely rain fell from a great cloud. He thought: Those who practice the same as Brahma, being wet from the untimely rain and threatened by the cold, will come, so I should make a fire. He entered the warm room and made a fire, and hung ropes around the courtyard, waiting at the door of the temple for their return. After some time, the monks returned, and then he laid out seats in the warm room. Those monks gave their robes to others, and hung those that were wet from the rain on the ropes. Then those monks entered the warm room and warmed themselves around the fire, and after some time, the cold disappeared, and they sat with their backs to the fire because the light of the fire was too hot. Then, that caretaker generated faith and prostrated at the feet of those monks, and began to make a vow: With this root of virtue that I have protected these practitioners from the threat of cold, may I in the future become a perfectly enlightened Buddha, just as the Buddha Light Protector prophesied that the Brahmin boy named Lama, when the Brahmin boy reaches the age of one hundred years, will become a Tathagata, Arhat, perfectly enlightened Buddha Shakyamuni, may I be able to ordain in his teachings, cut off all defilements, and realize Arhat. Just as they could not bear the light of the fire, may my splendor be unbearable even for the gods. Because he made such a vow, he will be able to ordain in my teachings, cut off all defilements, and realize Arhat, and because he is famous for his great power, even the gods cannot suppress his splendor. Then, the venerable Ananda said to the Blessed One: Venerable, after the Blessed One passes away, how much effort should we put into offering to the relics of the Blessed One? Ananda, keep your mind on small matters. This will be accomplished by Brahmins and faithful householders. Venerable, how should the Brahmins and faithful householders do this? Anan
