Say this to that monk: 'Venerable one, that elder monk understands it thus as Dharma. Understanding it as Vinaya is not Dharma. If he speaks of it as not being Vinaya, then, venerable one, it is wrong to hold this as Dharma.' Therefore, in this way, compare this Dharma with the Sutra, and examine the Vinaya correctly. If it does not agree with the Sutra, and does not appear in the Vinaya, and also contradicts the Dharma-nature, then this is not Dharma, this is not Vinaya. Know that this is not what the Teacher taught, and abandon it. Ananda, if a monk comes here and says this: 'Venerable one, I have heard directly from the Blessed One, and I have directly grasped it, like this: This is Dharma, this is Vinaya, this is what the Teacher taught,' then do not praise that monk who said that, do not criticize him. Without praising or criticizing, listen attentively, grasp the words and meaning of the Dharma, compare it with the Sutra, and examine the Vinaya correctly. If it agrees with the Sutra, and is correctly seen in the Vinaya, and does not contradict the Dharma-nature, then say this to that monk: 'Venerable one, this Dharma was spoken by the Blessed One, and the venerable one himself has also grasped this Dharma well.' Therefore, if this Dharma is compared with the Sutra, and examined correctly in the Vinaya, it agrees with the Sutra, and appears in the Vinaya, and does not contradict the Dharma-nature, then know that this is Dharma, this is Vinaya, this is what the Teacher taught, and hold it. Furthermore, Ananda, if a monk comes and says this: 'Venerable one, in such and such a place, there dwells a large Sangha of monks, together with elders, together with the Pratimoksha. Venerable one, I have heard directly from those many Sanghas of monks, and I have directly grasped it, like this: This is Dharma, this is Vinaya, this is what the Teacher taught,' then do not praise that monk who said that, do not criticize him.

Accord with the Sutras. If one correctly examines the Vinaya, it agrees with the Sutras. It appears correctly in the Vinaya, and if it does not contradict the Dharma-nature, then say this to that monk: "Venerable ones, the many monks of the Sangha have spoken of the Dharma and the Vinaya in this way, and the Venerable ones have also well grasped this Dharma. Therefore, this Dharma accords with the Sutras. If one correctly examines the Vinaya, it agrees with the Sutras. It appears in the Vinaya, and since it does not contradict the Dharma-nature, this is the Dharma, this is the Vinaya, and it should be understood and accepted as taught by the Teacher." Furthermore, Ananda, if a monk comes and says this: "Venerable ones, in such and such a place, many monks dwell, those who hold the Sutras, those who hold the Vinaya, those who hold the Matrka. From those many monks, the Venerable ones have manifestly grasped this: This is the Dharma, this is the Vinaya, this is what the Teacher taught." If he says this, one should neither praise nor criticize what that monk has said. Without praising or criticizing, listen attentively, and grasp the words and meanings of the Dharma, accord with the Sutras, and correctly examine the Vinaya. If it accords with the Sutras, and one correctly examines the Vinaya, it agrees with the Sutras, it appears in the Vinaya, and if it does not contradict the Dharma-nature, then say this to that monk: "Venerable ones, in this way, those many monks have explained the Dharma and the Vinaya, and the Venerable ones have well grasped these Dharmas. Therefore, these Dharmas also accord with the Sutras. If one correctly examines the Vinaya, it agrees with the Sutras. It appears in the Vinaya, and since it does not contradict the Dharma-nature, this is the Dharma, this is the Vinaya, and it should be known and accepted as taught by the Teacher." Furthermore, Ananda, if a monk comes and says this: "Venerable ones, in the place of such and such a one, monks dwell, namely, elders, and other elders, and leaders, and other leaders. Venerable ones, from those elder monks, I have manifestly heard and manifestly grasped this: This is the Dharma, this is the Vinaya, this is what the Teacher taught." If he says this, one should not praise what that monk has said.
