Ananda, how should a monk abide with himself as an island, with himself as a refuge, with the Dharma as an island, with the Dharma as a refuge, and not with other islands and other refuges? Ananda, in this case, a monk dwells contemplating the body in the inner body, with diligence, knowledge, and mindfulness, having abandoned covetousness and sorrow in the world. In the outer body, in the inner and outer body, in the inner feelings, in the outer feelings, in the outer and inner feelings, in the inner mind, in the outer mind, in the inner and outer mind, in the inner dharmas, in the outer dharmas, in the inner and outer dharmas, contemplating the Dharma, dwelling with diligence, knowledge, and mindfulness, having abandoned covetousness and sorrow in the world. Then, the Blessed One said to the venerable Ananda, "Ananda, where are you going, to the city of Vaishali?" The venerable Ananda replied to the Blessed One, "Venerable One, so be it." Then, the Blessed One traveled from the land of Vrji to the city of Vaishali, and stayed in the multi-storied hall by the Monkey Pond in Vaishali. Then, the Blessed One, in the early morning, put on his lower garment and robes, took his bowl, and entered Vaishali for alms with the attendant monk Ananda. Then, the Blessed One, having gone for alms and finished his meal, abandoned the remaining food, put away his bowl and robes, washed his feet, and went to the Chapala Shrine, and having arrived, stayed under a tree for the sake of the day's practice. Then, he said to the venerable Ananda, "Ananda, in Vaishali

I, the region of the Vrijis, the Chapala shrine, the seven mango trees, the many sons, the banyan tree of Gautama, the two sala trees, the giving up of effort, the shrine where the giants bind their turbans, and the delight in the various sights of Jambudvipa. People cherish life. Ananda, whoever it may be, if they cultivate and meditate extensively on the four legs of miraculous power, if they wish, they can remain for a kalpa or even longer than a kalpa. Ananda, the Tathagata also cultivated and meditated extensively on the four legs of miraculous power, so if the Tathagata wishes, he can also remain for a kalpa or even longer than a kalpa. After saying this, the venerable Ananda remained silent. The Blessed One spoke to the venerable Ananda two or three times, saying: Ananda, Vaishali, the region of the Vrijis, the Chapala shrine, the seven mango trees, the many sons, the banyan tree of Gautama, the two sala trees, the giving up of effort, the shrine where the Mallas bind their turbans, and the delight in the various sights of Jambudvipa. Even after saying this two or three times, the venerable Ananda remained silent. Then, the Blessed One thought to himself: Alas, this monk Ananda is certainly covered by the evil one, Mara. Therefore, even though I have spoken of such vast signs three times, he has not been able to comprehend their meaning. Knowing that Ananda was covered by the evil one, he said to the venerable Ananda: Ananda, in order to avoid any conflict between us, go and sit under another tree. The venerable Ananda replied: Very well, Blessed One.

Having heard from cessation, he sat near another tree for the sake of daytime conduct. Then, the evil Mara went to where the Blessed One was, and having gone, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and stood to one side. Having stood to one side, the evil Mara said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, please pass into complete nirvana! The time has come for the Sugata to pass into complete nirvana!" The Blessed One thought to himself: "This is certainly the evil Mara, who has come in this way in an emanation body." Having known this, the Blessed One said these words to the evil Mara: "Evil Mara, why do you say, 'Blessed One, please pass into complete nirvana! The time has come for the Sugata to pass into complete nirvana!'?" Monk, at one time, not long after the Blessed One had attained complete and perfect enlightenment under the Bodhi tree on the bank of the Nairanjana River in Uruvilva, I went to where the Blessed One was, and having gone, I said: "Blessed One, please pass into complete nirvana! The time has come for the Sugata to pass into complete nirvana!" The Blessed One said: "Evil Mara, I will not pass into complete nirvana until my disciples, monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen are wise, clear, intelligent, able to subdue opponents, and with the Dharma and Vinaya, subdue those who have arisen and will arise, and until their own victories are completely purified, and the Brahmacharya is spread and expanded for the benefit of many gods and humans, and is properly proclaimed." Now, the Blessed One's disciples, monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen are wise, clear, and intelligent, and have arisen and will arise, and are able to subdue the attacks of others with the Dharma and Vinaya, and their own victories are completely purified, and the Brahmacharya you have practiced is spread and expanded, and is properly proclaimed for the benefit of many gods and humans. Therefore, I request the Blessed One to pass into complete nirvana, Sugata.
