Praised, caused to be correctly upheld, correctly praised, correctly made extremely joyful, and then rose from the seat and departed. Then, the Blessed One said to the Venerable Ananda: Ananda, where shall we go? Shall we go to the city of Light? Venerable One, as you command. The Venerable Ananda listened to the Blessed One's instructions. Then, the Blessed One set out from the wandering place, traveled to the city of Light, and arrived at the city of Light, residing in the village Shapa grove north of the city of Light. At that time, the famine monasteries were decaying, and beggars found it difficult to obtain food. Then, the Blessed One said to the monks: Monks, now here the famine monasteries are decaying, and beggars find it difficult to obtain food. Monks, those of you who have acquaintances, those who have conversational partners, those who have friends, let them observe the summer retreat in the vicinity of Vaishali. If I also observe the summer retreat here in the city of Light with my attendant monk Ananda, then everyone will not become impoverished due to begging. Venerable One, as you command. Those monks listened to the Blessed One's instructions, and those who had acquaintances, those who had friends, those who had conversational partners, observed the summer retreat in the vicinity of Vaishali. The Blessed One also observed the summer retreat there in the city of Light with his attendant Venerable Ananda. During that summer retreat, the Blessed One was afflicted by a very severe illness, unbearable and violent, nearing death. Then, the Blessed One thought to himself: I am afflicted by a very severe illness, unbearable and violent, nearing death, and if the monastic community of monks also disperses because of this, the monastic community of monks disperses, and I pass into nirvana, this is not what I should do. Rather, I should suppress this feeling with diligence, not attend to all signs, and with the signless samadhi of the mind, realize and abide in it with the body.

Thus he contemplated. Then, the Blessed One, with diligence, again restrained that single feeling, not attending to any characteristics, and having manifestly realized the signless Samadhi of the mind with his body, he remained. Thus, the Blessed One became superior in conduct and superior in living. Then, the venerable Ananda arose from his contemplation within, went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, the venerable Ananda said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable Blessed One, the illness is severe, unbearable, violent, and approaching death, reaching the throat, and I am like one who has taken poison, and my body is not moving. The directions are also confused, and the teachings I have heard have also been abandoned. But I still have a hope that the Blessed One will not pass into Nirvana until he has given some final instructions for the sake of the Sangha of monks. Ananda, whoever thinks, 'The Sangha of monks is mine, I will instruct the Sangha of monks, I will lead the Sangha of monks,' that one will surely speak some final instructions for the sake of the Sangha. Ananda, but I do not have this thought, 'The Sangha of monks is mine, I will instruct the Sangha of monks, I will lead the Sangha of monks.' Why should I show some final instructions for the sake of the Sangha of monks? Furthermore, Ananda, what dependence do I have on the Sangha of monks? Ananda, the teachings that I have always practiced, such as the four mindfulnesses, the four right abandonments, the four miraculous feet, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven branches of enlightenment, and the eight noble path branches, have all been explained. Ananda, the Tathagata does not have a hidden teacher's example, thinking that there is something that others should not know, so the Tathagata conceals it. Ananda, however, when the Tathagata

The Blessed One was afflicted with a severe illness, experiencing intense, unbearable pain, and was near death. He thought to himself: 'I am afflicted with a severe illness, experiencing intense, unbearable pain, and am near death, and the Sangha of monks will also be scattered. If the Sangha of monks is scattered, it is not fitting for me to pass into Nirvana. Instead, I should restrain this feeling with diligence, not attend to any signs, and abide in the signless concentration of mind, having realized it directly with my body.' So, I restrained that feeling again with diligence, not attending to any signs, and having realized the signless concentration of mind directly with my body, I abided in it. Therefore, the Thus-Gone One practiced even more diligently and lived even more comfortably. Furthermore, Ananda, the Thus-Gone One, having reached the age of eighty, was old and frail, and lived relying on two supports. Just as an old cart is maintained by relying on two supports, so too, the Thus-Gone One, having reached the age of eighty, was old and frail, and lived relying on two supports. Therefore, Ananda, do not grieve, do not be distressed, do not lament. Whatever is born, comes into being, is made, is conditioned, and is accumulated is dependently arisen and has the nature of separation. Where could there be such a thing as not decaying? That is impossible. Ananda, I have already told you that all things that you love, cherish, delight in, and find agreeable are bound to be separated, destroyed, dispersed, and not reunited. Therefore, Ananda, whether now or in the future, whoever abides with themselves as an island, with themselves as a refuge, with the Dharma as an island, and with the Dharma as a refuge, not relying on other islands or other refuges. Why is that? Ananda, whether now or in the future, whoever abides with themselves as an island, with themselves as a refuge, with the Dharma as an island, and with the Dharma as a refuge, not relying on other islands or other refuges, these are the foremost of my disciples who desire to learn!
