The lineage of the Bhikṣuṇīs. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Śrāvastī, in the Jeta Grove, in the Garden of Anāthapiṇḍada. The Bhagavan instructed: "Before the Bhikṣu who has been requested, truthfully declare the purity of those Bhikṣuṇīs." The requested Bhikṣu stayed in the gatehouse. When the Bhikṣuṇīs began to approach him, he said, "Don't touch, don't touch!" and then began to flee. They followed him for a moment, then returned to the Bhikṣuṇīs' summer residence. When the Bhikṣuṇīs had not performed the Uposatha in this way, those Bhikṣuṇīs spoke to the Bhikṣus. The Bhikṣus reported to the Bhagavan. The Bhagavan instructed: "The requested Bhikṣu should admonish them not to flee in that way, and not to touch the sisters. The Bhagavan said: "One should request the Bhikṣu who imparts the precepts to the Bhikṣuṇīs. He should also stay there diligently." When another requested one did not quickly go to the gatehouse, a craftsman came there for some need, contemplating the five-part wheel in the gatehouse. Those Bhikṣuṇīs thought: "This must be our precept giver." They sat down at his feet and said: "Venerable one, please listen." He thought: "Let me see what these shaven-headed Śrāmaṇerīs are saying." Then he said nothing. They said again: "Venerable one, please listen. The Bhikṣuṇī Sangha of the King's Monastery bows its head at the feet of the Bhikṣu Sangha of the Jeta Grove, asking if there is little harm, little fear, light movement, good living, strength, comfort, and no fault, living in ease? Please report this and also declare the purity of the Uposatha." He did not know what to say, so he said nothing. They said: "Alas!"
