The Blessed One said, "One should make prohibitions and distinctions with three places." After the monks who were in retreat made prohibitions and distinctions to the Sangha with three places, they would again perform the posadha. Some of them said, "Venerable ones, just as the posadha is performed for the sake of purification, I see that the prohibition and distinction should also be like that. Therefore, whatever is the posadha is also the prohibition and distinction." Others said, "The posadha is one thing, and the prohibition and distinction are another." At that time, they reported this matter to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said, "Monks, it is true that the posadha is one thing, and the prohibition and distinction are another. However, since the posadha cannot be performed separately from the prohibition and distinction, therefore, monks, after making the prohibition and distinction, there is no need to perform the posadha. For, in this way, the posadha is performed for the sake of complete purification, and the prohibition and distinction are also completely for the sake of purification." The origin of the story is in Shravasti. Monks, because of harboring resentment, abandoning equanimity, seeking each other's faults, and making prohibitions and distinctions, they entered the Sangha. In that Sangha, they competed with each other, discussing the decline of discipline, the decline of views, the decline of rituals, and the decline of livelihood, and they mixed and talked with others, gossiping, despising each other, friends, teachers, preceptors, the same teacher, the same preceptor, and they lived divided into factions. At that time, the Sangha became greatly divided, the Sangha became noisy, the Sangha split into two factions, and the Sangha became discordant. Then, those mediators advised, "Venerable ones, there is no need to argue, please each obtain the mind of renunciation." The Blessed One also said, "Monks, in any place where monks gather together and fight, expose faults, attack, argue, and quarrel, I do not want to listen much, let alone go and stay there. I will not go there." Monks, in any place where the three dharmas are completely abandoned and the three dharmas are increased, what are the three dharmas that are completely abandoned? They are non-attachment.
