He was staying in the Joyful Grove of Giving. In Shravasti, there was a monk who entrusted his mattress to a monk friend and went traveling. That monk left the mattress as it was spread out, and no one slept on it or looked at it. The mattress was empty. A venomous snake descended from the sky, wandering around and living freely. It went to the mattress and coiled up underneath it. After some time, a monk suddenly came to that monk's residence. That monk let him rest. After he recovered from the fatigue of the journey, he had him pay homage to the stupa and those as venerable as Brahma. After he paid homage to the stupas, the sun set. That monk said to him, 'O venerable one, here is water, earth, and mustard oil, and here is also the mattress. Since you are tired from the journey, wash your feet and sleep as it is spread out.' Driven by the karma of his previous life, he slept without checking the mattress and fell asleep. As he slept, he pressed down on the venomous snake. The snake had no chance to move, and tormented by the pain of being squeezed, it bit the monk's body. He was born into the suffering of being bitten by fangs, and he thrashed about, and he also died. Both of them passed away. After some time, night turned to dawn. That monk went to him and gently knocked on the door. Since he had passed away, how could he answer? He thought, 'He must be sleeping from exhaustion and will wake up on his own.' After some time, it became dawn. That monk went to him again and forcefully

This person died from being bitten by a venomous snake. Some said that this person died because a living being transformed its body. At that time, the monks requested the Blessed One. The Blessed One considered, what is the fault? It was because the monk's mattress was infested with insects, and he did not turn the opening of the mattress outwards, nor did he inspect it regularly. Therefore, a monk whose mattress is infested with insects should turn the opening of the mattress outwards, fold it, and hang it on the robe's hook. Knowing this, the Blessed One said: Monks, that monk committed a fault because of carelessness. Therefore, any monk whose mattress is infested with insects should try his best to pat and fold it, and turn the opening of the mattress outwards. Or fold it and hang it on the robe's hook. If someone wants to sleep, they should also inspect the mattress before sleeping. The Blessed One said that someone who wants to sleep on a mattress should inspect the mattress before sleeping. They used fire to inspect the mattress. The Blessed One said: Do not use fire to inspect the mattress, but inspect the mattress during the day. The monks turned all the mattresses over. The Blessed One said: Those mattresses that have been placed for a long time should be turned over from the base and inspected. Other bedding should be shaken before sleeping. The origin of the story is in Shravasti. There were two monks living in one room. One of the monks ordained another young man. This young man was very sleepy and would get up after a long time. His preceptor would always scold him. Once, he slept for a long time again. Startled, he got up and put on his sweat cloth and lower garment. He went to the preceptor's place like that. The preceptor had also just gotten out of bed and was sitting wearing his lower garment. The young man prostrated at his feet with his head. Because he had just shaved his hair and beard not long ago, he stood up, and the preceptor's lower garment was caught on his head and fell down, and he became naked. His sweat cloth also fell down. Both of them were naked, and they were seen living in one room in an unseemly manner. Those with life said: How wonderful! How did this happen?

He said, "I know the name you were born with now." Both were ashamed and lost their composure. Then he scolded that monk. The monks said to him, "Venerable one, if you are always scolded like that, what would you do?" He said, "Venerable ones, if this and previous matters could be reconciled together, it cannot be reconciled now, so it should be dealt with separately." They asked, "What happened?" He then explained the matter to them in detail. They said, "Venerable one, it is reasonable for you to scold him for his fault." He remained silent. At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One thought: It is reasonable for that monk to scold him. Monks, therefore, whatever the fault is, is to pay homage with one Dharma robe and to be attached to paying homage with one Dharma robe. Therefore, monks, one should not pay homage with one Dharma robe, nor should one be attached to paying homage with one Dharma robe. Knowing this, the Blessed One taught: That monk It is reasonable to scold him. Monks, therefore, one should not pay homage with one Dharma robe, nor should one pay homage to someone wearing one Dharma robe. Nor should one be attached to paying homage with one Dharma robe. Monks, if one pays homage with one Dharma robe, or pays homage to someone wearing one Dharma robe, or is attached to paying homage with one Dharma robe, one will commit a serious offense. The origin of the matter is in Rājagṛha. The Blessed One said to the monks, "One should not let monks who do not understand the precepts rest." Monks residing in various places, from villages, cities, rural areas, and around the royal palace, came to the stupa to pay homage, but no one let them rest, but instead expelled them, letting them stay in corridors, gatehouses, staircases, the corridors of gatehouses, and under trees. Some Brahmins and householders who did not believe in Buddhism saw them and asked, "Venerable ones, have you been expelled from the monastery? Why are you staying here like this?" They replied, "Yes, that's how it is."
