At that time, among the offerings of charity, fire offerings are the most excellent; among combinations, the sun god is the most excellent; among humans, the king is the most excellent; among rivers, the ocean is the most excellent; the moon is the lord of the stars; the sun is the lord of light; in all directions, above and below, all sentient beings who walk, including the world with gods, among speech, the fully enlightened Buddha is the most excellent. At that time, the Brahmin Padmasambhava, while making merit dedication, saw an old man eating sesame oil, and after seeing this, he reported to the Blessed One, saying: 'Are all the Shravakas pleasing the wise Gautama?' The Brahmin said: 'It is not certain, some please, some do not please.' 'O Gautama, some seek the Dharma, some seek sesame oil.' 'O Gautama, has my disciple, the Brahmin boy Madga, arrived?' The Brahmin has arrived. 'Wise Gautama, have you had any conversation with him?' The Brahmin said: 'Yes.' 'O Gautama, for this matter, please tell me in detail all the conversations you had with him.' Then, the Blessed One told the Brahmin Padmasambhava all the conversations he had with the Brahmin boy Madga. Then, the Brahmin Padmasambhava reported to the Blessed One, saying: 'O Gautama, the Brahmin boy Madga has not sought the nature of nature.' 'O Gautama, please forgive the Brahmin boy Madga.' The Brahmin said: 'I forgive him.' 'Wise Gautama, when you see me entering the chariot, holding the reins, waving the whip, or shouting loudly, the Brahmin Padmasambhava will bow to my feet with his head and ask if I am well, if there is no fear, if I am healthy, if my actions are light, if I am touching strength and happiness, please understand it that way.' 'Wise Gautama, when you see me walking in the middle of the street, taking off my shoes, arranging my clothes, or stretching my arms, please consider that I am prostrating to the wise Gautama.'

and so on up to 'enjoyment,' just as before. O wise Gautama, when do you see a radiance among your retinue, or on the road, or on a seat, or on a crest jewel? From 'O wise Gautama, please allow me to prostrate to you' up to 'enjoyment,' just as before. Why is that? O wise Gautama, brahmins obtain enjoyment through fame, and they live solely on fame. Then the Blessed One thought, 'Alas, this brahmin Lotus Heart is very arrogant. I should teach him the Dharma so that he abandons his arrogance.' Then the Blessed One taught the brahmin Lotus Heart with words in accordance with the Dharma, truly revealing, truly praising, truly guiding, and truly delighting him. The first Dharma-related speech of the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, is like this: talk of generosity, talk of ethics, talk of heaven, and the praise and faults of desires, defilement, purification, renunciation, the benefits of solitude, and the Dharma of the aspects of purification, all extensively and truly revealed. When the Blessed One saw that he was delighted, with a virtuous mind, content, without obscurations, endowed with fortune, endowed with power, and able to understand the excellent Dharma, then the Buddha, the Blessed One, taught the excellent Dharma, namely suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path, extensively and truly revealing these four noble truths. Just as a clean cloth, without stains and suitable for dyeing, when placed in dye, can be well dyed, so too, the brahmin Lotus Heart, while sitting on that seat, realized the four noble truths, namely suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path. Then the brahmin Lotus Heart saw the Dharma, attained the Dharma, and realized the Dharma.

And, knowing the categories of the Dharma, reaching the depths of the Dharma, transcending doubt, transcending hesitation, not relying on others, not being led by others, having obtained fearlessness towards all dharmas in the Teacher's teachings, he rose from his seat, draped his upper robe over one shoulder, and, with palms joined in reverence, addressed the Blessed One, saying: 'Venerable one, I am accomplished, manifestly accomplished. I take refuge in the Blessed One, I take refuge in the Dharma and the Sangha. I beseech the Blessed One to accept me as a lay follower. From this day forth, for as long as I live, even at the cost of my life, I vow to take refuge.' Then, the Brahmin Padmagarbha, greatly pleased by what the Blessed One had said, rejoiced and praised it. He bowed his head to the feet of the Blessed One, rose from his seat, and departed. The Blessed One considered: 'The fault of the Brahmin Padmagarbha being reviled arose from the monks eating food while dedicating merit. Therefore, knowing that monks should not eat food while dedicating merit, the Blessed One instructed the monks: 'Monks, the Brahmin Padmagarbha has become the basis for revilement. Therefore, monks should not eat food while dedicating merit.' If monks eat food while dedicating merit, they will commit a grave offense. The Blessed One instructed: 'Monks, when dedicating merit, you should not eat food.' At that time, a newly ordained monk had missed the mealtime. Then the monks asked the Blessed One, and the Blessed One instructed: 'Monks, for the time being, if a monk is eating leftover food and he neither understands the meaning nor hears the sound, then he may eat it, and there is no fault. If he hears the sound but does not understand the meaning, then he may also eat it, and there is no fault. If he both hears the sound and understands the meaning, then he should not eat it. If he eats it, he will commit a grave offense.' The Blessed One said: 'If someone hears the sound and understands the meaning, and then eats after hearing it, they will commit a grave offense.' After that, in another monastery, the
