There is not even a little that is not pervaded or has not become pervaded by the joy and bliss born of (meditative concentration). It is like this: in the lake placed on the summit of Mount Anavatapta, water does not flow in from the east, nor from the south, nor from the west, nor will water flow in from the north. There, true rain does not fall at any time. Except for that created water, a great mass of water arises from the great water hole of the pool, so that the entire pool is thoroughly moistened with cool water, completely moistened, completely filled, completely pervaded. Just like that, there is not even a little that is not pervaded by cool water throughout the entire pool. In the same way, this body itself is thoroughly moistened with the joy and bliss born of meditative concentration, completely moistened, completely filled, completely pervaded. Just like that, there is not even a little that is not pervaded by the joy and bliss born of meditative concentration throughout the entire body, or that has not become pervaded. Having abandoned joy, he dwells experiencing equanimity, mindfulness, perfect knowledge, and bliss separately on the body. He attains and dwells in the third dhyana, which the noble ones have spoken of as dwelling in bliss with equanimity endowed with mindfulness. This body of his is thoroughly moistened with bliss without joy, completely moistened, completely filled, completely pervaded. Just like that, there is not even a little that is not pervaded by bliss without joy throughout the entire body. It is like this: lotuses, water lilies, blue lotuses, or white lotuses are born from water, grow in water, and dwell with their roots submerged in water. From their roots to their tips, there is not even a little that is not pervaded by cool water, or that has not become pervaded. In the same way, this body itself is thoroughly moistened with bliss without joy, completely moistened. Completely filled, completely pervaded. Just like that, there is not even a little that is not pervaded by bliss without joy throughout the entire body, or that has not become pervaded. He abandons bliss and also abandons suffering. Since he has previously abandoned pleasure and displeasure, he attains the fourth dhyana, which is neither suffering nor bliss, but is equanimity and perfectly pure mindfulness.
