For example, an unfortunate person borrowed money. He used the borrowed money for his business, and his business was successful. Therefore, he repaid the debt and had enough property to support his wife. He thought: I borrowed money and used it for my business, so my business was successful. Therefore, I repaid the debt and have enough property to support my wife. He felt happy and joyful because of this. For example, an unfortunate person suffered from illness, was in pain, and had a severe condition. Eating food would harm his body, and drinking water would upset his stomach. Later, he became healthy, free from illness, and strong, so eating food was beneficial to his body, and drinking water did not harm his stomach. He thought: I used to be sick, in pain, and had a severe condition, so eating food would harm my body, and drinking water would upset my stomach. Now I am healthy, free from illness, and strong, so eating food is beneficial to my body, and drinking water does not harm my stomach. He felt happy and joyful because of this. For example, an unfortunate person was a slave, being driven, commanded, and used, unable to act independently. Later, he was no longer a slave, no longer driven, no longer commanded, no longer used, and was able to act independently. He thought: I used to be a slave, being driven, commanded, and used, unable to act independently. Now I am not a slave, no longer driven, no longer commanded, no longer used, and am able to act independently. He felt happy and joyful because of this. For example, an unfortunate person's hands were tightly bound backwards, and he was bound. Later, he was freed from the bondage, auspicious, happy, and without obstacles. He thought: My hands used to be tightly bound backwards, and I was bound. Now I am freed from the bondage, auspicious, happy, and without obstacles. He felt joyful because of this. For example, an unfortunate person

Having become happy from fear, and having turned from a bad year into a good year, he thought to himself: 'I have become happy from fear, and from a bad year into a good year, and because of that I have become happy, my mind is joyful.' Just as he had done with illness, servitude, bondage, and fear, he surely saw himself as free from these five hindrances. He abandoned the five hindrances that afflict beings, weaken wisdom, lead to the side of harm and sorrow, and are discordant. He dwelt having achieved the first dhyana, which is born of seclusion, detached from desires, detached from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, accompanied by thought and examination, and filled with joy and pleasure born of seclusion. He thoroughly moistened, completely moistened, fully satisfied, and completely pervaded this very body with the joy and pleasure born of seclusion. Just as there is no part of his entire body that is not pervaded by the joy and pleasure born of seclusion. For example, a skilled bath attendant or a bath attendant's apprentice would pour finely ground bathing powder into a bronze plate, wooden bowl, or fish skin, and repeatedly mix it with water until it became moist. Then, the bathing ball would be oily, become oily, be pervaded by oiliness, and be clear, with the inner and outer oiliness not separating or leaking. Similarly, he thoroughly moistened, completely moistened, fully satisfied, and completely pervaded this body with the joy and pleasure born of seclusion, so that there was no part of his entire body that was not pervaded by the joy and pleasure born of seclusion. In order to pacify discursive thought and examination, he dwelt having achieved the second dhyana, which is born of concentration, free from discursive thought and examination, and filled with joy and pleasure, because his inner mind was focused on a single, intense joy. He thoroughly moistened, completely moistened, fully satisfied, and completely pervaded this very body with the joy and pleasure born of concentration. Just as his entire body was immersed in concentration.
