The herdsman asked: Where can one take a hot bath? He replied: The noble sons of the Shakya ascetics bathe every half month, go there and bathe. He began to bathe, entering among the monks. He was wearing clothes dyed red, and all the monks thought he was also a monk, so no one stopped him. He quickly took a bath, feeling uneasy. After a while, some monks came to that direction, and they saw him. One of them was more observant and said: Venerable ones, there is an old monk here bathing. They said: Good, let's do that. They went to him and said: Old man, come and bathe. He turned his head, and they grabbed his shoulder and lifted him up. He said: The unclean, unbathed sons of the Shakya monks have touched someone who has bathed. They said: We are the sons of the Shakya ascetics. Old man, who is like you? He said: I am a herdsman. They said: Hey, herdsman, who gave you a bath? At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: Monks, therefore, when monks take a hot bath, they should set up gatekeepers and ask the names of the monks who enter. They also began to ask the names of the monks, and the Blessed One said: Do not ask the names of the monks you know. When the Buddha, the Blessed One, was traveling from Kosala, he came as he pleased and stayed in the forest of his liking. At that time, King Prasenajit of Kosala gave taxes including grass, wood, and water as alms to the Brahmin named Lotus Heart, making his power greatly increase, and he enjoyed these. The disciple of the Brahmin Lotus Heart, a Brahmin boy named Asundara, was very learned, with clear and fluent speech. The Brahmin of Lotus Heart

He would have about five hundred children recite the secret mantras of the Brahmins. The Brahmin Lotus Heart thought that the ascetic Gautama, the son of the Shakya clan, had shaved his hair and beard, put on saffron robes, and gone forth from home to homelessness solely out of pure faith. He had awakened to the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment and become a Buddha. The virtues, fame, voice, and verses of the wise Gautama were so widely known that they spread in all directions. It was said that the Blessed One Gautama was the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened one, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the well-gone, the knower of the world, the unsurpassed guide of beings to be tamed, the teacher of gods and humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One. In this world, including gods, demons, Brahma, ascetics, and Brahmins, as well as gods and humans, he had personally realized and confirmed this truth through his own enlightenment: "My defilements have ceased, I have practiced the holy life, what needed to be done has been done, I no longer know of any other existence." His Dharma is good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, with good meaning and good words, unadulterated, completely perfect, completely pure, completely refined, and correctly expounds the holy life. This is known from the secret mantras. The destiny of a great man endowed with the thirty-two major marks is only one of two possibilities: if he remains at home, he will become a universal monarch, victorious in all four directions, possessing Dharma, a king of Dharma, possessing the seven precious things. His seven precious things are: the precious wheel, the precious elephant, the precious horse, the precious jewel, the precious woman, the precious householder, and the seventh is the precious minister. He also has a brave and resolute son, endowed with excellent limbs, who can completely destroy the enemy forces, and even make the empty full, and his rule extends to the ocean.

For the entire earth, there is no harm or injury, this (righteous Dharma) has no punishment, nor is it pursued by swords. It is in accordance with the Dharma, and is properly established and exists with impartiality. If one shaves his hair and beard, puts on the saffron robe, and renounces the world from home to homelessness with only pure faith, then the name of the Thus Come One, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened Buddha, will be widely known in the world. It is heard that he traveled from Kosala, proceeded as he wished, and resided in the forest as he wished. Having heard this, the Brahmin's son said to Madhuka: Madhuka, do you know? I heard that the Shramana Gautama, the son of the Shakya clan, shaved his hair and beard from the Shakya clan, put on the saffron robe, and renounced the world from home to homelessness with only pure faith... This name will be widely known in the world. I learned from secret words that the destination of a great man with the thirty-two marks of a great man has only two possibilities: if he stays at home, he will become a Chakravartin king, victorious in all four directions... This name will be widely known in the world. He traveled from Kosala, proceeded as he wished, and resided in the forest as he wished. Having heard this, the Brahmin's son said: You, Brahmin, go to where the wise Gautama is, and after going there, how the merits, fame, voice, and vast verses of the wise Gautama are spread in all directions, whether it is in accordance with reality or not? Is his name true? Go and find out. The Brahmin's son Madhuka listened like listening to the heart of the Brahmin lotus, and then together with many venerable Brahmin elders, departed from the venerable place, went to where the Blessed One was, and after arriving, sat down on one side. After that, the venerable Brahmins, together with the Blessed One, began to engage in pleasant and satisfying conversations.
