His son is wise and compassionate. There is no fear in that monastery. If the wise believe, let them go there. If we go there, we will surely find something, they said. Those wise ones thought it was good, and said, "Wise ones, come here, let's go there." After saying this, they raised their trunks like elephants, and with hope, they finally came before him. He said to them, "Have you come well?" and spoke many joyful words. They were very happy and their hearts were very firm. After sitting for a while, they said, "Holy one, we are frozen by the cold, do you have a little fire?" He said, "I am a monastery person." Another said, "If we are thirsty, do you have a little water?" He said, "I am a monastery person." They said, "Holy one, do you have a little flour to put on wounds?" He said, "I am a monastery person." They said, "Holy one, do you have a little cloth that can be wrapped around wounds?" He said, "I am a monastery person." They said, "Do you have a little butter to put on wounds?" He said, "I am a monastery person." If we are hungry, do you have a little rice and warm zanba? He said, "I am a monastery person." They said, "What is the date today, and what is the constellation? Where does the sun fall?" He said, "I am a monastery person." One of them knew the conduct of a monk, and so, questioning him thoroughly, said, "Holy one, since that is so, let me ask you this. For a moment, are you an Arhat? A Non-Returner? A Once-Returner? Or a Stream-Enterer?" He said, "I am a monastery person." They said, "Holy one, since that is so, let me ask you another. Have you attained the Realm of Neither Perception Nor Non-Perception? Or the Realm of Nothingness? The Realm of Infinite Consciousness? The Realm of Infinite Space? The Fourth Dhyana? The Third Dhyana? The Second Dhyana? Or have you attained the First Dhyana?" He said, "I am a monastery person." They said, "Holy one, since that is so, are you a holder of the Three Baskets? Or a holder of the Sutra Pitaka? A holder of the Vinaya Pitaka?"

Ma, is the one who holds the mother. He said, "I am a dweller in solitude." They said, "Since that is so, let us ask him something else like this. What is your name?" He said, "I am a dweller in solitude." They said, "O venerable one, which direction is this?" He said, "I am a dweller in solitude." Thus, in every way, he only said, "I am a dweller in solitude." They became very angry and said, "Wise ones, are we robbers? This must be a great robber, who does not even know his own name, but only pretends to hold vows and deceives the world." They became very displeased with him and beat him severely, breaking his head, bowl, and staff, tearing his robes, and leaving him almost dead. That very night, they fled from that place. The next morning, he went to Jeta Grove in a miserable state. The monks saw him and asked, "Venerable one, who has put you in such a state?" He explained in detail what had happened. At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed, "A code of conduct should be established for monks who dwell in solitude: A monk who dwells in solitude should always keep a fire kindled, carry a small amount of flour, keep coarse cloth, and also keep remnants of grains and food that have been eaten. He should be skilled in stars, dates, and the sun. He should be skilled in directions, skilled in places of practice, and keep water. He should carry a small amount of butter and sesame oil. He should be skilled in holding the Sutras, holding the Vinaya, and holding the Matrikas, and even be skilled in speaking sweetly. If a monk who dwells in solitude does not properly uphold and practice the established code of conduct, he will commit a serious offense." The origin of the story is in Shravasti. In Shravasti, there lived a beggar who became ill at another time. He went to a doctor and asked for some good medicine. The doctor said, "Venerable one, bathe with hot ashes and you will recover." He said, "Doctor, I live by begging,
