If the breast is touched with a tooth or nail, it will swell. It becomes very large, and when he plays with boys and girls, if they are in a state of being surrounded by anger, if they touch with a tooth or nail, that place will swell up before long. When the venerable Shariputra knew the time to liberate him, he went to that house. He taught the Dharma to the wife of that Brahmin, and showed a sign, saying, "This boy is a śrāmaṇa who follows me." That Brahmin said, "Child, from the time you were not born, I have offered you to the venerable Shariputra, to be a śrāmaṇa who follows him. That last sentient being gazed at the face of the venerable Shariputra for a long time, and then followed him. At that time, the venerable Shariputra liberated him and ordained him as a bhikṣu. He ate a tooth-stick, scraped his tongue, and left it unwashed. A bee ate it, and then it died. Then, some houseflies ate it a little, and they also died. Then, various birds ate it, and they also died. A cat ate it, and it also died. A bee and many ants ate it, and they all died. In this way, many beings died and lay there separately. Later, one day, the bhikṣus began to eat tooth-sticks in that direction. They saw the dead beings. One of them said, "Venerables, why have these many beings died?" Others said, "We do not know." They pondered in that way. Then, another young bhikṣu came. He said, "Venerables, the Brahmin renunciate who lives here with the venerable Shariputra ate a tooth-stick, scraped his tongue, and left it unwashed, and many beings ate it. In this way, they died from eating the dirt of the tongue." At that time, the bhikṣus reported this to the Blessed One. The Blessed One taught, "Bhikṣus, some wicked people are like this."

Therefore, monks, toothsticks should not be discarded without being cleaned. Discarding them would be a serious offense. The Blessed One said that toothsticks should be cleaned after use. Other monks, because there was little water, did not know what to do. The Blessed One said: Whoever has little water should temporarily rub it on the ground to remove the dirt from the tongue. At another time, someone started dyeing, he dyed clothes with dye, then turned them over to dry. At that time, the venerable Nanda came to that side, and when he saw it, he said: Venerable, let me help. He said: Venerable, please do it well. Nanda naturally had a habit of causing trouble everywhere, he dried the new clothes in the shade, the old clothes in the sun, and also put the wet clothes in the shade. He (the dyer) said to the venerable: Don't do that. But he did it again and again and could not be stopped. He (Nanda) moved around everywhere, and the dyer chased after Nanda, and Nanda began to run away. At that time, the venerable Shariputra came to that side, and he said: Venerable, what are you doing? What are you doing? But he moved around everywhere, his anger flared up, and he could not stay, so he chased after Nanda. Nanda began to hit him with a banyan tree, but still could not stay. The venerable Shariputra grabbed him and let Nanda run away. But he still hit him with the banyan tree, knocking off all the leaves of the banyan tree. At that time, the monks heard about this and reported it to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said: Do not be so angry. The Blessed One said not to be so angry. At another time, Nanda was assigned as a steward, he went to the steward and said: Venerable, there is such a job, please do it. As soon as he saw him, he moved around everywhere as before. At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said: For such a person who has hatred, one should not oneself

One should not order someone to do work three times. However, a monk sitting next to him should order him, saying to him: You should do such and such work. He should also entreat him, saying that you should do such and such work. He should also strive with steadfastness and strong diligence, and in this way recognize this fifth turning or non-turning wheel of cyclic existence. And comprehend that all compounded things are destructive, falling, separating, and having the nature of destruction, abandoning all defilements, becoming an Arhat, being free from desire from the three realms, regarding rubble and gold as equal, having a mind equal to the sky and the palm of the hand, not distinguishing between sandalwood and cow dung, breaking the shell of ignorance with wisdom, obtaining wisdom, supernormal powers, and individual correct knowledge, turning one's back on existence, the acquisition of desires, and reverence, becoming an object to be offered to, to be remembered, and to be openly praised by the gods, including those with power and those with close power. The monks said to the venerable Shariputra: Venerable Shariputra, it is very wonderful that someone who lives with you and is particularly angry like this can also attain the state of an Arhat. He explained his past lives in detail to those monks. The monks became doubtful and asked the Blessed One, who cuts off all doubts: Venerable, what karma did this monk commit that he was born as a venomous snake? The Blessed One said: Monks, this monk has done and accumulated deeds that will obtain a collection of karma, transform conditions, be close like a fire, and will inevitably occur. Monks, how can others experience separately the deeds done and accumulated by this monk? Monks, the deeds done and accumulated will not mature in the external earth element, will not mature in the water element, will not mature in the fire element, will not mature in the wind element, but will mature in the aggregates, elements, and sense bases that are grasped in this way. Even after hundreds of thousands of kalpas, deeds will not be lost; when the conditions are gathered, they will mature in oneself.
