Some who had gone forth and were upholding the Vinaya became ill because their elements were not in balance. He went to a doctor and said, "Good sir, my body has become like this, please show me a medical treatment." The doctor said, "Venerable one, do such and such a poultice and you will recover." He did the poultice, and after a while, he bathed once, and when he bathed with cold water, it was interrupted. The doctor said, "Venerable one, has the poultice improved you?" He said, "Good sir, it has not improved, I have only bathed once." He said, "Venerable one, did you not bathe with cold water?" He said, "Good sir, just as you said." He said, "Venerable one, you have done something wrong, how can you bathe if it is interrupted by cold water? That is the end of it there, do the same poultice again like this, do the bathing thoroughly before bathing, and then bathe." He said, "Good sir, the Blessed One has not allowed it." He said, "Venerable one, if that is the case, how should I do the poultice ritual?" At that time, the monks requested the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said, "Therefore, I allow that wiping cloths should be placed and the bathing should be completed and then bathe." When the Blessed One said, "Wiping cloths should be placed," the monks did not know what kind of wiping cloths to use. The Blessed One said, "It should be wiped with a sponge, or leaves, or cloth, and after the bathing is completed, it should be washed with warm water." The basis of the story is in Shravasti. Then again, at that time, a poisonous snake lived in the forest. After a while, when a cowherd set fire to the forest, the poisonous snake was burned by the fire and went back and forth, and was surrounded by the light of the fire again, and was about to die. It jumped out of the fire and crouched near a tree and coiled around it. After a while, the venerable Shariputra, while wandering, came near that place. He went to the tree and looked, and saw a poisonous snake burned by the fire, severely burned, and exhausted by the feeling of suffering. After seeing it, he examined whether there were any roots of virtue in its continuum, and he saw that there were. He examined under whose power it would be.

The snake also did so himself. He sprinkled water on the snake and spoke three Dharma words: O good-looking one, all compounded things are impermanent. All dharmas are without self. Nirvana is peace. Generate great faith in me, and in this way you will be separated from the desire of animals and be born in a happy realm. After saying this, he left. Immediately, he was carried away by an eagle. He (the snake) generated great faith in the Venerable Shariputra, and after he died, he was born into a Brahmin family of six lineages in Shravasti. The Venerable Shariputra thought: Where will that poisonous snake be born after it dies? After a brief observation, he saw that he was born into a Brahmin family of six lineages in Shravasti. After seeing this, in order to tame him, he began to go to his house. When he arrived there, he made the Brahmin couple take refuge and established them in the training. Later, one day, he went to that house alone, and the Brahmin said to him: Venerable, are there no other Shramanas who follow the Venerable? The Venerable Shariputra said: Venerable, do I not have other Shramanas who follow me, who are born from elsewhere like kusha grass or thatch? Whoever is obtained from someone like you will become my following Shramana. He said: Venerable, I do not have a son who can become the Venerable's following Shramana. If I have a sentient son, I will offer him to the Venerable and let him become a following Shramana. He said: May you be without illness, I will accept it. After saying this, he left. Soon, that Brahmin woman passed nine months and gave birth to a son. After giving birth to the son, on the twenty-first day, a grand birth celebration was held, and a name befitting the lineage was given. He was nourished with milk, yogurt, raw butter, ghee, clarified butter, and other various major implements, raised, and quickly raised like a lotus in a pond. When he was sucking his mother's breast, if he was a little careless
