He remained. Then, the Blessed One arose from meditation in the afternoon and sat on the seat prepared in front of the monastic community of monks. Having sat down, he spoke to those monks as follows: "Monks, for what reason have you done such a thing?" They replied: "Venerable one, a slight thought of mockery and a slight thought of laughter arose." Then, the Blessed One spoke to the monks as follows: "Monks, whoever does this with a thought of laughter, it will become a serious offense for him. If it is thought of as mockery, there is no transgression. However, monks, what is the fault? It is that the monks ate food with sound. Therefore, monks should not eat food with sound. If a monk eats food with sound, it will become a serious offense." After the Blessed One said that monks should not eat food with sound, Brahmins and faithful householders offered the monks royal gooseberries, rice porridge, ghee, radishes, and sugarcane, and the monks, being doubtful, did not accept them. They said: "Noble ones, if the Buddha, the Blessed One, had not appeared in the world, our place of offering would be the non-Buddhists. Now that the Blessed One has appeared in the world, you are now the place of offering. If you do not accept, we will lose the provisions for the next life. The Blessed One also said in the Sutra of Timely Giving that whatever is newly harvested grain and newly harvested fruit, they should first be given to those who possess discipline, and then later be fully enjoyed by oneself. This is timely giving, therefore, please accept it with compassion." The Blessed One said: "Since that is the case, then allow acceptance. Accept the offering, and the rice porridge should be eaten with rice and flour. The radishes, royal gooseberries, and ghee should be cut into pieces and eaten."

Someone invited the Buddha and the Sangha of monks to his house for a meal. There, the monks, without waiting for others, came in groups, and they said, "Householder, please give to us, we will eat." After they had eaten and left, others came in the same way, and the householder, feeling busy with giving, became unhappy and said, "Alas! You should all gather together and then be given to!" At that time, the monks heard it and reported to the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed, "Therefore, monks, one should not eat when the householder is busy. Those who arrive first should sit at the door, and after everyone has gathered, then enter and eat. Eating when it is busy will result in a serious offense." The Blessed One said, "Monks, one should not eat when it is busy." Another monk became ill, and his servant went to fetch food, but did not return for a long time, and he regretted it. At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One instructed, "Therefore, there are five situations in which it is permitted to sit and eat alms: those who have come suddenly, those who are leaving, the sick, those who are caring for the sick, and those who are working, give to them." The origin of the story is in Shravasti. In Shravasti, there lived a wealthy householder, with much property and great enjoyment, who at another time developed great faith in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. He invited the Buddha and the Sangha of monks to his house for a meal, and the Sangha of monks was empty. The Buddha, the Blessed One, stayed in a place decorated with objects and also accepted alms. For five reasons, the Buddha, the Blessed One, stayed in a place decorated with objects and also accepted alms, from there on. At this time, the Blessed One wanted to establish the basis for training in the discipline of the Shravakas, so he stayed in a place decorated with objects and also accepted alms, just as mentioned before. After those monks had eaten, they left in the same way, and that householder wanted to listen to the Dharma, so he looked around.
