What is it? It is the suffering of birth, the suffering of aging, the suffering of sickness, the suffering of death, the suffering of separation from what is loved, the suffering of encountering what is not loved, and the suffering of not finding what one desires. In short, the five aggregates of clinging are suffering. This is called the Noble Truth of Suffering. What is the Noble Truth of the Origin of Suffering? It is the craving for rebirth, and the intense joy that arises from the attachment to pleasure in this and that. This is called the Noble Truth of the Origin of Suffering. What is the Noble Truth of the Cessation of Suffering? It is the complete and unreserved abandonment, the thorough discarding, the making endless, the exhaustion, the detachment from desire, the cessation, and the Nirvana of the craving for rebirth, and the intense joy that arises from the attachment to pleasure in this and that. This is called the Noble Truth of the Cessation of Suffering. What is the Noble Truth of the Path Leading to the Cessation of Suffering? It is the Noble Eightfold Path, namely, right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration. This is called the Noble Truth of the Path Leading to the Cessation of Suffering. When this Dharma discourse was taught, the venerable Ājñātakauṇḍinya, without clinging, his mind was completely liberated from the defilements. The remaining four monks also generated the Dharma eye, free from dust and stainless, towards the Dharma. At that time, the venerable Ājñātakauṇḍinya said to the venerable Mahākāśyapa: Venerable Mahākāśyapa, I have directly heard this Dharma discourse. When this Dharma discourse was taught, without clinging, the mind was completely liberated from the defilements. The remaining four monks also generated the Dharma eye, free from dust and stainless, towards the Dharma. From then on, starting from "incomplete," I have collected the second sutra of the Blessed One, and by what Brahmacharya

The same as before, between "I have not refuted and have not scolded." Therefore, this is the Dharma, this is the Vinaya, this is what the teacher taught, knowing this, he said to the venerable Ananda as follows: Venerable Ananda, where did the Blessed One preach the third sutra? He clearly stated that it was preached for the five monks in Varanasi, the place where the sages fell. What is that? Thus I have heard, at one time, the Blessed One was staying in Varanasi, in the Deer Park of the Sage's Fall. At that time, the Blessed One instructed the remaining four monks as follows: Monks, form is not self. Monks, if form were self, form would not be subject to harm or suffering, and it could change, it could be like this or that, it could become like this or that. Monks, because form is not self, form is subject to harm or suffering, and it cannot change, it cannot become like this or that. Monks, feeling, perception, and volition are also not self. Monks, if perception and so on were self, as before, consciousness would not become like this or that. Monks, what do you think? Is form permanent or impermanent? Venerable, it is impermanent. Furthermore, if it is impermanent, is it suffering or non-suffering? Venerable, it is suffering. Furthermore, it is impermanent, it is suffering, and it is subject to complete change, yet a noble disciple who has heard the teachings would accept it as self, saying this is me, this is mine, this is what I possess? Venerable, it is not so. Monks, what do you think? Are feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness self? As before, would they say this is me, this is mine, this is what I possess? Venerable, it is not so. Monks, therefore, whatever form there is, whether past or future
