Having entered the monastery from the ground, lying down on his right side, with one foot on top of the other, attending only to the perception of light, mindfulness, and awareness, he would lie down. The Venerable Ānanda, merely by not placing his head on a pillow stuffed with reeds, in this way, the Venerable Ānanda, without grasping, his mind was completely liberated from the defilements. Then, the Venerable Ānanda, having experienced joy and bliss separately, was liberated. Having attained the state of an Arhat, he went to Rājagṛha, and went to where the Venerable Mahākāśyapa and the five hundred Arhats were gathering and compiling the Dharma in the cave of the Nyagrodha tree. Then, the Venerable Mahākāśyapa said this to the monks: "Venerable ones, in the future, monks will be forgetful and physically weak, and will not be able to uphold the Sūtras, Vinaya, and Abhidharma that are not verses of the Sūtras. Therefore, in the morning, the verses of the Sūtras should be recited. In the afternoon, the Sūtras, Vinaya, and Mātṛkā should be studied." After the Venerable Mahākāśyapa said this, those monks heard from the Venerable Mahākāśyapa, and those monks said this to the Venerable Mahākāśyapa: "Venerable Mahākāśyapa, which of the Sūtras, Vinaya, and Mātṛkā should be studied first?" He said: "Venerable ones, for the time being, the Sūtras should be studied first." So be it. The five hundred Arhats requested the Venerable Mahākāśyapa to compile the Dharma, and then sat on the lion throne, and encouraged the Venerable Ānanda. "Venerable Ānanda, if you are willing, are you willing to compile the Sūtras of the Tathāgata? Are you willing?" Then, the Venerable Mahākāśyapa began to perform the request and the two karmas, please listen, venerable Sangha. If this Venerable Ānanda is willing to accomplish the compilation of the Sūtras of the Bhagavan, if the time is right for the Sangha and it is permissible, please grant permission by the Sangha. In this way, the Sangha grants permission for the Venerable Ānanda to accomplish the compilation of the Sūtras.

Appointment: May the Venerable Ananda compile the Sutras of the Blessed One. This is the request. The work should be done as follows: Venerable monks, please listen. The Venerable Ananda is willing to compile the Sutras of the Blessed One. Appoint the Venerable Ananda to compile, the Venerable Ananda compiles the Sutras of the Blessed One, appoint the Venerable Ananda to compile. The Venerable Ananda compiles the Sutras of the Blessed One, those Venerables who approve, please remain silent. Those who do not approve, please speak up. The Sangha approves and permits, the Sangha appoints the Venerable Ananda to compile the Sutras of the Blessed One. In this way, silence is taken as consent. The Venerable Ananda, on the lion throne of the Dharma speaker, five hundred Arhats spread five hundred sanghati robes. Then, the Venerable Ananda looked in the four directions, kept the mind of compassion close to sentient beings, and generated respect for the Dharma. Towards those who practice similarly to Brahma, with respect as the aim, he circumambulated the lion throne to the right, touched the ground with his head. He prostrated according to the order of seniority, mindful of impermanence, and sat on the lion throne with majesty. Then, looking at the imperturbable assembly as deep as the ocean, he thought: If I can hold all the Sutras spoken by the Blessed One, then there are also the Sutras spoken by the Blessed One in the abode of the Nagas, there are also the Sutras spoken in the abode of the gods, and there are also the Sutras spoken directly to me. Those that have come down from one to another, having heard and held them in this way, all these hearings should be proclaimed. The knowledge and vision of the gods are inferior to me, one says to another: Alas! The noble one in robes, the noble Ananda, is expounding the Dharma spoken by the Thus-Gone One, we should listen with one-pointed mind. Then, at that time, another son of the gods spoke in verse: Where the Dharmas are well established, the three realms all rejoice.
