A wet nurse was hired, and she was tormented by suffering and cried. She asked, 'Why is this child crying?' She replied, 'Elder sister, why shouldn't I cry?' She picked up the child and began to make him happy, embracing him with her hands and kissing him. Even holding him in her lap didn't work. She nursed the child, and when she looked, she saw a bamboo skewer stuck in his mouth. She quickly opened the child's mouth and pulled out the skewer with her hand, but the child was already breathless and dead. She beat her chest, cried, and fell to the ground. The people of the house ran over and asked, 'What's wrong?' She, filled with compassion and love, with tears welling up, said, 'Alas, that wicked woman, practicing sinful deeds, angered by jealousy, stuck a bamboo skewer in my son's mouth and killed him!' They also began to cry. The surrounding neighbors heard and ran over, saying, 'Oh my, this is a sudden disaster! This child, innocent and harmless, has been killed!' Many people surrounded her, exclaiming, 'Oh my!' The one who was beating her chest, crying, and swearing, said, 'If I killed your son, may my husband be eaten by a snake and die! May one son be eaten by a fox! May the second son fall into the river and drown! May my parents be struck by lightning! May I even eat my son's flesh, go mad, and wander around with a scattered mind!' Thus she swore. Monks, what do you think? That householder's second wife is like this, just like this nun, emaciated Gautami. She is completely covered by extreme afflictions, so even if she killed the child, she lied and swore. Due to the ripening of that karma, her husband was eaten by a snake and died. One son was killed by a fox. One fell into the river and drowned. Her parents were struck by lightning. She ate her son's flesh, went naked, went mad, and wandered around with a distracted mind. Furthermore, she also went forth from the Blessed One Kashyapa There, she practiced celibacy for a lifetime, but did not attain any great qualities.

My preceptress was the venerable Light Protector, who was declared by the perfectly enlightened Buddha to be the foremost among the upholders of the Vinaya. At that time, she made a prayer at the time of her death: 'Although I have practiced celibacy for one lifetime in the presence of the venerable Light Protector, the unsurpassed object of offering, I have not attained many qualities. By this root of virtue of mine, may I, when the venerable Light Protector, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, prophesied to the Brahmin boy Lama, saying, "Brahmin boy, when you live to be a hundred years old, Shakyamuni will become the Tathagata, the perfectly enlightened Buddha," may I ordain in that Dharma, abandon all defilements, and realize Arhatship. Just as my preceptress was declared by the venerable Light Protector, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, to be the foremost among the upholders of the Vinaya, may I also be declared by the venerable Shakyamuni, the king of the Shakyas, to be the foremost among the upholders of the Vinaya.' Because she practiced celibacy for one lifetime, she ordained in my Dharma, abandoned all defilements, and realized Arhatship. She made a prayer to become the foremost among the upholders of the Vinaya. By the power of that prayer, she is now declared by the Tathagata to be the foremost among the upholders of the Vinaya. Furthermore, the monks asked the Buddha, the venerable one: 'Venerable skinny mother Gautami, what deeds did her parents do, that as a result of what karma, they were killed by falling meteoric iron? What deeds did her husband do, that he died from being bitten by a snake? What deeds did her two sons do, that one was bitten by a wolf and the other fell into the water and died?' The venerable one replied: 'Monks, they themselves did and accumulated the deeds, and when the collection is obtained and the conditions ripen, it is like being near a river, it will inevitably befall them. The deeds they did and accumulated will not be experienced by anyone else. Monks, the deeds done and accumulated do not ripen in the external realm of earth, not in the realm of water, not in the realm of fire, not in the realm of wind, but in these aggregates, realms, and sources of apprehension.'
