The virtuous and non-virtuous actions you have done have matured! Actions do not get lost. Even after hundreds of millions of kalpas, when the time is right, they will ripen as fruits for sentient beings. Monks, in the past, in this fortunate kalpa, when beings lived for twenty thousand years, a teacher named Light Protector appeared in the world. He was the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Complete Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Gone to Bliss, Knower of the World, Unsurpassed, Tamer of Beings, Teacher of Gods and Humans, Buddha, Bhagavan, residing in the Deer Park of the City of Delight. At that time, in the City of Delight, there lived another wealthy householder, rich, with much wealth, great possessions, a vast and spacious dwelling, a gathering of servants and property, and jealous of the wealth of others. He built a monastery across the Varaka River, where monks from various regions resided. The townsfolk borrowed goods from that householder. One of them defaulted on the goods three times. The householder said to him, 'You ungrateful person, you have greedily defaulted on my goods three times. Do not leave until you have paid me back!' The man said, 'Householder, give me one more chance. If I default again, I will give you my three sons and my wife as slaves.' The householder wrote another contract and gave him the goods. But he was still unable to pay and defaulted again. So the householder sent him, his wife, and his sons to work at the monastery. Because he lived in the City of Delight, he had to cross the river every day to cook rice porridge for the monastic community at the monastery, while his wife and sons cleaned. In that monastery, there was an Arhat monk who managed the affairs of the sangha. Later, one day it rained, and the Varaka River flooded. The worker, his wife, and his sons were delayed for a long time. The Arhat monk came and said, 'Hey, sir, it has been so long, and you still haven't come. What about the monastic community of monks?'
