There are also those who, having departed from their bodies, were born here. Then, another son of the gods, having rejoiced in what the Blessed One, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, and Indra, the lord of the gods, had said, spoke thus to the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana: "Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, it is so, it is so. It is so, indeed, that a gathering of gods of various kinds has assembled and is dwelling here. Among these hosts of gods, there are those who, knowing the Buddha and possessing faith, have departed from their bodies and been born here. There are also those who, possessing faith in the Dharma, the Sangha, and the precepts pleasing to the noble ones, have departed from their bodies and been born here." Thus he inquired about their well-being. "Mahāmaudgalyāyana, may you and the four assemblies of Jambudvīpa also be well. Then, for those who had not come to Jambudvipa, the gods of the Thirty-three descended to Jambudvipa. They went to the Blessed One to behold and attend to the Blessed One. If the gods of the Thirty-three had such miraculous powers and strength, they would beseech the Blessed One to consider with compassion that it would be best to descend from the realm of the Thirty-three to Jambudvipa. Therefore, Maudgalyayana, go to Jambudvipa and tell the fourfold assembly that the Blessed One will descend from the realm of the Thirty-three to the city of Samkasya in Jambudvipa, the forest of Apavarika, under the Udumbara tree, seven days from today. Then, the Venerable Great Maudgalyayana, having heard from the Blessed One, bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and entered into such samadhi. How did he enter samadhi? Just as a strong man bends or extends his arm, the Venerable Great Maudgalyayana disappeared from the realm of the Thirty-three and went to Jambudvipa. Then, the Venerable Great Maudgalyayana came to Jambudvipa and said to the fourfold assembly: 'Friends, the Blessed One will descend from the realm of the Thirty-three to the city of Samkasya in Jambudvipa, the forest of Apavarika, under the Udumbara tree, seven days from today.' Then, the fourfold assembly, after seven days had passed, took incense and perfume and went to the city of Samkasya. Then, many people living in the city of Samkasya cleared the city of Samkasya of stones, rubble, and mounds, sprinkled it with sandalwood water, hung fragrant incense, erected banners and heavenly streamers, hung silk ribbons, and scattered various flowers, making it pleasing to the mind, like a pleasure garden in the joyful grove of the gods, spreading and decorating seats on the wide and unobstructed ground. Then, the Blessed One taught, exhorted, and praised the gods of the Thirty-three with the Dharma.
