When that happened, the foremost of the Shravakas, named Shariputra, had a disciple named Diligent, who carried a whisk and came to the great Naga lake Anavatapta. The gods dwelling in Anavatapta would wash and offer his whisks, and also sprinkle the washed water on their heads. Therefore, you have not done well in summoning someone who is neither our teacher nor our companion to oppose the miraculous transformations of the supreme human Dharma! They said to each other, 'Alas, this is also one of his group, let us go and seek others.' Having said this, they pretended to honor him with deceitful behavior, left that place, and sat down in another secluded place to discuss: 'Alas, how should we seek other companions? Tell us.' Some of them said, 'In this forest called the City Garden, there lives a great sage with five superknowledges, let us go to him, and he will become our companion.' Some said, 'He is not capable, but in the great forest called the Ascetic Forest, there lives a great ascetic with five superknowledges, let us go to him, and he will become our companion.' At that time, in the valley of the snowy mountains, adorned with forests of various trees, abundant with springs, flowers, fruits, and roots, beautified with waterfalls and lakes, there lived about five hundred sages, most of whom possessed five superknowledges. Among them, one sage with five superknowledges came near the city, wandered among them, and came to them. They greeted him with 'Welcome' and asked, 'Where have you come from?' He told them everything that had happened. They were delighted and went to them. Then, they rejoiced greatly with each other, relieved the fatigue of the journey, and said, 'Alas, you and we practice the same Brahma-conduct, let us oppose the miraculous transformations of the supreme human Dharma of the Shramana Gautama, and you also be our friend!'

Speak. They said, 'Okay, let it be done that way, but please show us a sign.' They were delighted and spoke respectfully to them, satisfying them and departing. After a while, a man named the young prince Nagu, the maternal uncle's brother of King Pasenadi of Kosala, adorned with incense and garlands, was passing in front of the king's palace when one of his consorts threw a garland from the upper pavilion, hitting his body, and was seen by another person. In the world, there are those who are close, those who are not, and ordinary people, so he also spoke to the minister. The minister also reported to the king, 'O god, the young prince Nagu is flirting with the consort of the goddess.' Kings are uninvestigating, so he commanded the ministers, 'Wise ones, completely depose the young prince Nagu and make him lose his limbs today.' They took him to the street, made him lose his limbs, and left him there, his relatives' eyes filled with tears. Other large crowds also surrounded him. After a while, the non-Buddhists also came to that direction. His relatives said to them, 'Saints, please speak the truth so that the limbs and branches of the young prince Nagu may be restored as before.' They had no courage and stood up without saying a word and left. After a while, the venerable Ānanda went to beg for alms and came to that direction. They said to him, 'Saint, please speak the truth so that the limbs and branches of the young prince Nagu may be restored as before.' He said, 'Wise ones, I will go and report to the Blessed One and then come.' They thought, 'Now he is saved.' And they breathed a sigh of relief. Then, the venerable Ānanda quickly went to Shravasti, put down his alms bowl, and went before the Blessed One, and at that time he reported the matter to the Blessed One in detail. The Blessed One instructed, 'Ānanda, go and let the relatives of the young prince Nagu put the limbs and branches in their original positions, and let them speak this truth:'

Do it like this. By the truth and the words of truth, among all beings without feet, with two feet, with four feet, with many feet, with form, without form, with perception, without perception, and neither with nor without perception, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened One is said to be supreme; among all conditioned and unconditioned dharmas, the dharma of detachment is said to be supreme; among all gatherings, multitudes, assemblies, or retinues, the Sangha of the Tathagata's disciples is said to be supreme; among all moral conduct, asceticism, austerity, and abiding in pure conduct, the moral conduct pleasing to the noble ones is said to be supreme. By this truth and the words of truth, may the limbs and organs of the young prince Nagu return to their former state. Say this, and they will return to their former state. The venerable Ananda, having heard the instructions of the Blessed One, his relatives placed the limbs and organs in their proper positions, and then began to speak this truth: By the truth and the words of truth, from "among all beings without feet" to "among all these, the truth and the words of truth of the moral conduct pleasing to the noble ones is said to be supreme, may his limbs and organs return to their former state," they did as before. By the words of truth, his limbs and organs returned to their former state, and the crowd opened their eyes in amazement, shouting, "Alala, the venerable Ananda has defeated the heretics!" Then, the venerable Ananda, taking the young prince Nagu, went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, the venerable Ananda said to the Blessed One: Venerable One, this young prince Nagu is this one. Then the young prince
