I began to perform miracles such as showing light, raining, and lightning. Individual beings developed faith through miracles, and like cutting off the roots of a tree, they touched the feet (of the Buddha). With this root of virtue from our actions towards such a true place of giving, may we, while living in this body, even until death, receive five hundred karshapanas (kārṣāpaṇa, Devanagari: कार्षापण, Romanized Sanskrit: kārṣāpaṇa, literal meaning: karshapana) and enjoy them with joy. Monks, what do you think? The virtuous woman called 'living by form' is none other than this wife of the householder, Light Virtuous Woman. Those five hundred joyful ones of that time were these five hundred wild men. At that time, they offered alms to the Pratyekabuddha and made a prayer. Due to the maturation of that karma, they were reborn in samsara for five hundred lifetimes, receiving five hundred karshapanas and enjoying them with joy. Now, having become the wife of the householder, even until death, they receive five hundred karshapanas and enjoy them with joy. Therefore, monks, the maturation of completely black deeds is also completely black. The white and mixed ones are also mixed. Therefore, monks, abandoning completely black deeds and mixed deeds, one should strive only for completely white deeds. Monks, you should train yourselves in this way. The Blessed One, thinking about the faults that arise from monks going to such houses, therefore, monks, the Blessed One, knowing that one should not go to such houses, said to the monks: Monks, the wife of the householder, Light Virtuous Woman, seeing the monk, developed discriminatory thoughts and died. Therefore, monks, a monk should not go to a house where such faults may occur. Monk, going to such a house will result in a serious offense. The story takes place in Rajagriha (Rājagṛha). There was a renunciate monk who repeatedly went to secluded places to meditate. There, he encountered a host of demons.

A goddess waited for him to act improperly, but she could not succeed. She (thought), "I cannot overcome this noble one, I will harm him." She said, "Sister, if I am a monk with good conduct, how can you harm me?" She said, "I will find a chance," and focused on finding his fault. At another time, he rolled up his robes like a knee pad and fell asleep. The goddess thought, "Now is the time for revenge!" She took it and threw it on top of the palace above King Rūpakāya's heart essence, where he was sleeping. He woke up startled and saw it, asking, "Who are you?" She replied, "I am a practitioner." Among practitioners, which one? "I am a practitioner of the son of Shakya." "Noble one, how did you come here?" He told her what had happened. She said, "J01,Vo11,Po33B Noble one, why do you live in such an evil place? If I did not believe in the Blessed One, I would kill you or separate you from the Dharma." But he remained silent. At that time, the monks reported this to the Blessed One. The Blessed One thought, "Any slight fault that has occurred is because the monks live in such an evil place. Therefore, monks should not live in such an evil place." Knowing this, the Blessed One said to the monks, "Monks, the slander of King Rūpakāya's heart essence has fallen. Therefore, monks should not live in such an evil place. If a monk lives in such an evil place, he will commit a serious offense." The origin of the story is in Rājagṛha. At that time, a young monk, due to improper diet and behavior, was afflicted with a disease called "འབྲས་" ('bras, tumor). He groaned in pain from the disease, and the monks surrounded him. Then, the king of medicine, Jīvaka, came and asked, "Noble ones, what is this?" The monks replied, "Jīvaka, this young monk is afflicted with a disease, we don't know what kind of disease it is."

That is so. See what needs to be done. He looked and said, 'Venerable, it is an abscess, it would be beneficial to pierce it.' The monks said, 'If that is so, then pierce it.' He pierced it, and after it had improved a little, he left without bandaging it. It became very painful, and the monks said, 'Venerable ones, whoever is skilled, please bandage it.' Then another young monk bandaged it. The physician thought, 'I went back without bandaging that venerable one.' So he returned and asked, 'Venerable ones, where is the abscess that I pierced?' The monks J01,Vo11,Po34A said, 'What is the matter?' 'Venerable, I will bandage it.' 'That physician, it has already been bandaged.' 'Venerable, who did it?' 'This young man.' 'Venerable, I will see how it was done.' Saying this, he went to him and saw that it was well bandaged, and he said, 'Venerable, it is well bandaged, even if I am not here, please do so in the future.' He said, 'This physician, even if I have not allowed it for a while, what need is there to mention doing it? I cannot be certain whether the Blessed One allows it or not.' He said, 'Venerable, the Blessed One is compassionate, why would he not allow it?' At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One instructed, 'Therefore, allow the skilled monk to bandage it.' After the Blessed One instructed to allow the skilled monk to bandage it, they bandaged in the corridors, by the ponds, at the doorways, and on the steps. The Blessed One instructed, 'Do it in a secluded place. If it is done elsewhere, it will become a serious offense.' The origin of the story is in Shravasti. Brahmins and faithful householders came to the monastery and asked the monks, 'Venerable ones, if I am afflicted with such and such a disease, what kind of food should I seek? What kind of medicine should I take?' They asked about the ritual of food. Those monks who did not know did not say anything. Those who knew were hesitant and did not speak.
