Having arrived there, those attendants, seeing the venerable Mahakashyapa, stood up. But the plump woman didn't even move her buttocks. Those people, seeing the holy Mahakashyapa, who is worshiped by gods and humans, said: We stand up, but you don't even leave your cushion, that's not good. She said: This person is ordained from the heretics, extremely foolish, stupid, extremely stupid, I, a Shakya ordained woman, holder of the three baskets, a speaker of the Dharma, full of confidence in wisdom and liberation, why should I stand up when I see him? The monks heard this and reported it to the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed: Monks, faithful Brahmins and householders will reproach this as a reason. Therefore, a bhikkhuni should immediately stand up upon seeing a bhikkhuni. If she does not stand up, it constitutes a transgression. The Blessed One said: A bhikkhuni should immediately stand up upon seeing a bhikkhuni. Later, on one occasion, the bhikkhuni Utpalavarna (Lotus Color) was outside the summer retreat house, sitting in front of hundreds and thousands of attendants, teaching the Dharma. The venerable Ananda, in the morning, having put on his robes and carrying his bowl, entered Shravasti for alms, and after begging for alms in Shravasti, he returned and went to where the bhikkhuni's summer retreat house was. The bhikkhuni Utpalavarna saw the venerable Ananda, and as soon as she saw him, she stood up from her seat. The venerable Ananda sat on the seat. After sitting down, he asked: Sister, what sutra have you composed? She replied: It is called the 'Holy' sutra. The venerable Ananda began to explain that sutra in detail, and the bhikkhuni Utpalavarna stood, pricking up her ears to listen. The venerable Ananda, absorbed in teaching the Dharma, did not tell her to sit down. As a result, she stood all day, and being dizzy from the hot sun, she fainted and fell to the ground. The non-believers said: Alas, isn't the bhikkhuni Utpalavarna free from desire? It is said that she fell to the ground because she saw a young and handsome Shakya man and was driven by desire. They slandered in this way, the assemb

Having heard this, the monks petitioned the Blessed One. The Blessed One then declared: Monks, Brahmins and householders ridicule lineages. Therefore, monks, when teaching the Dharma, say, 'The noble mother is present.' If a monk is hurried and forgets, a nun should request to be seated. Say, 'May the noble ones know, I am here.' When the Buddha, the Blessed One, was in Shravasti, residing in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Garden, the Blessed One addressed the monks there, saying: Monks, the sun has risen, the crow is cawing, the farmer is plowing, and the wild man is weeping. Therefore, monks, know that this meaning is a metaphor. Its meaning should be understood as follows: Monks, 'the sun has risen' is a supreme term for the Thus-Gone One, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened One. 'The crow is cawing' is a supreme term for the one who teaches the Dharma. 'The farmer is plowing' is a supreme term for giving and generosity. 'The wild man is weeping' is a supreme term for the retinue of Mara. Therefore, monks, the compassionate teacher who cares, is merciful, intends benefit, intends welfare, the compassionate one, has done what should be done for you, the Shravakas. Now, dwell and meditate in solitude, under trees, in empty houses, valleys, caves, heaps of grass without cover, cemeteries, forests, mountains, and remote places. Monks, do not be heedless. Lest you become regretful later, this is my teaching. Monks, in lakes, lotus ponds, caves, gardens, springs, and trees adorned with flowers and fruits, in such excellent and delightful places, deeply contemplate and strive for practice. Nuns also, in dense groves near the royal gardens, and in other places suitable for women, deeply contemplate and strive for practice. The Blessed One heard that beings were entering the wound-gate called 'woman' due to the transformation of the ripening of previous karma, and then declared: Therefore,

Monks, when nuns practice mindfulness, they should not sit in full lotus position, but should sit in the half lotus position to abide in the Dharma and practice mindfulness. The Blessed One said, "Nuns, abide in the half lotus position and practice mindfulness." The nuns then abided in the half lotus position and began to practice mindfulness. However, they heard that small creatures were entering their vaginas. The Blessed One then instructed, "Place petals or thin leaves in that place, and then sit on them in the half lotus position." The story takes place in Shravasti. The Venerable Upali asked the Blessed One, "Venerable, if a nun renounces her vows and returns to lay life, and then wants to be re-ordained and take the Bhikkhuni vows in the well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya, and become a Bhikkhuni, can she be ordained? Or can she not be ordained?" The Blessed One instructed, "Upali, she cannot be ordained. Upali, a nun who has once renounced her vows and returned to lay life is not allowed to be re-ordained and take the vows in the well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya, and become a Bhikkhuni." The story takes place in Shravasti. The Venerable Upali asked the Buddha, the Blessed One, "Venerable, you have said that a Bhikkhuni should not discuss or remember the deficiencies in a Bhikkhu's discipline, views, conduct, and livelihood. So, Venerable, can a Bhikkhuni discuss or remember the deficiencies in a Bhikkhu's discipline, views, conduct, and livelihood? Are there any such circumstances?" The Blessed One instructed, "Upali, there are no circumstances in which a Bhikkhuni should discuss or remember the deficiencies in a Bhikkhu's discipline, views, conduct, and livelihood." In short: A merchant's leftover food should not be discarded; one should not inquire about obstructing dharmas; for the sake of others and in cases of bleeding. The story takes place in Shravasti.
