Having arisen from... he became a renunciate possessing the three pitakas. In a secluded place, he established a walking path near an Ela tree. As he walked there, the leaves of the Ela tree touched his forehead, and he became annoyed by it. After some time, when he was tired from mental yoga and was walking, the leaves touched his forehead, and he became angry at it, cut it down, broke it into pieces with both hands, and threw it away, saying, 'What fault did the Blessed One Light Protector see in this thing that has neither life nor sustenance, that he made it the basis of discipline?' He also said this. He angrily broke the discipline, and when his body disintegrated, he was born among the nagas, with an Ela tree growing on his head, filled with hundreds of thousands of kinds of worms. Numerous swarms of bees hovered and landed. The smell of pus and blood emanated and dripped with a strong odor. Monks, what do you think? That renunciate monk who held the three pitakas at that time was none other than this Naga King Ela's Leaf. He had ordained in the teaching of the perfectly complete Buddha Light Protector, and due to the maturation of the karma of breaking the discipline out of extreme anger, he was born among the nagas, with an Ela tree growing on his head, completely filled with hundreds of thousands of kinds of worms. Numerous swarms of bees hovered and landed. The smell of pus and blood emanated and dripped with a strong odor. Monks, therefore, the maturation of black karma is also black, and the maturation of white karma is also white. The maturation of guides is also that of guides. Monks, therefore, having abandoned black and guiding karmas, one should strive only for white karmas. Monks, you should train yourselves in this way.' Thus spoke the Blessed One, and the monks rejoiced and praised the words of the Blessed One. Then, the Rishi Narada went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and sat to one side. Having sat to one side, the Rishi Narada said to the Blessed One, 'Venerable One, the vow I made earlier has been fulfilled.'

Venerable one, if I could obtain the status of a monk, ordination and full ordination, from the Vinaya, the Dharma well-spoken by the Blessed One, I would practice the pure life in the presence of the Blessed One. The Blessed One said to him, "Come, monk, practice the pure life!" As soon as the Blessed One said, "Come, monk," he shaved his head, put on the robes, held a bowl and a water pot in his hand, and having shaved his hair and beard, he was like one who had been ordained for seven days, abiding in the conduct of one who had been ordained for a hundred years. By the Tathagata's utterance of "Come!", possessing a body with shaven hair and wearing robes, having transformed his appearance by the Buddha's intention, he immediately remained only with subdued senses. When the Blessed One ordained the venerable Nalada by saying, "Come, monk!", at that time, those who practiced the pure life did not know how to address him. The monks then asked the Blessed One. The Blessed One said, "Monks, this one is a son of the Katyayana lineage, therefore call him Katyayanaputra." The monks began to call him Katyayanaputra, and his name became Katyayanaputra. Then the Blessed One said to the venerable Katyayanaputra, "Katyayanaputra, this world mostly relies on the two views of existence and non-existence. Katyayanaputra, this world is mostly bound by the aggregates and grasping, and relies on the two views of existence and non-existence. Katyayanaputra, I do not acknowledge, accept, abide in, or cling to the latent mental obsessions as 'self'. Katyayanaputra, when there is birth, this suffering arises; when there is cessation, this suffering ceases. Katyayanaputra, if you have no doubt or hesitation about this, and only wisdom arises that does not depend on others, then, Katyayanaputra, this alone is right view. By this alone, the Tathagata establishes right view. Why is that? Katyayanaputra, seeing the arising of the world with right wisdom as it is
