Now, it is appropriate to bestow a reward upon the young medicine man who performed the divine service. The king gave the boy many gifts. He also bestowed upon the attendant a great silk cloth worth a hundred thousand. The attendant thought, "This garment is fitting for the king, but to whom should I give it?" He thought, "The Blessed One is my father in terms of Dharma, so I shall offer it to him." So he offered it to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said to the Venerable Ananda, "Ananda, make this into a Dharma robe and offer it to me." The Venerable Ananda took it, and having taken it, he saw that the Blessed One's three Dharma robes were worn out, so he began to sew. As a result, not only were the Blessed One's three Dharma robes made, but also the Venerable Ananda's upper and lower garments, and even a sweat-absorbing undergarment were made. In the abode of Tushita, the Buddha spoke this question: Who is the lordly king? If attached, he is with dust. If without dust, he becomes free from dust. Who here is called attachment? How does the foolish one grieve? How does the wise one become happy? Having separated from that which is possessed, who here is called accomplished and happy? Having written this, at the time when the Buddha, the Blessed One, had not appeared in the world, no one was able to grasp it, nor were they able to speak its meaning. At the time when the Buddha, the Blessed One, appeared in the world, although they were able to grasp those questions, they were not able to speak their meaning. Once, the lord of yakshas, Vaishravana, went to the midst of the gods of Tushita for some reason, and he saw those questions that had been asked. He was amazed, but although he grasped them, he was not able to understand their meaning. So he took them to the Willow Palace, wrote them on a grass mat, and placed them there. At that time, in a place called Stone Heap, there lived a naga king named Ela Leaf, who had long yearned, "When will I see the Buddha, the Blessed One?" His friend, a yaksha named Golden Light, went to the Willow Palace of the lord of yakshas, Vaishravana, for some business.

When he became old, he saw those questions written on a grass mat. He picked them up, recited them, and began to study them, but he did not understand their meaning. So he took them to the stone heap, gave them to the dragon king Ela's leaf, and said: Friend, these questions were spoken by the Buddha, but no one understands their meaning. You take these questions and the golden vase, and go around the villages, towns, and royal palaces, saying: Whoever can speak the meaning of these questions, I will give him the golden vase and serve him with great respect. If someone can speak it, give him the golden vase. If not, proclaim that this is not a city or town, and then leave. He took them, recited them all, and transformed himself into the form of a Brahmin boy. Carrying the golden vase, he went around the villages, towns, and royal palaces, and then went to Varanasi. He said on the main roads, crossroads, four-way intersections, and three-way intersections of Varanasi: Listen, wise residents of Varanasi and people from all over! I have come with these questions. Whoever can speak the meaning of these questions, I will give him this golden vase and serve him with great respect. Some pretended to be wise, some were surprised, and hundreds of thousands of creatures gathered, but no one could speak the meaning. As he was about to proclaim that this was not a city or town, the Brahmins and householders living in Varanasi said: For the time being, do not proclaim that this is not a village or town. Let the Shramanas and Brahmins whom our people certainly respect, those who live in monasteries, all come, and then proclaim that this is not a city or town. He said: Who are they? They are Narada and so on. He said: Okay, I will do so. Then he stopped, and after a while, Narada came. He sat in front of him and said: Great sage, I have come with these questions. Who

Whoever can speak the meaning of these, this golden vase will be given to him, and he will also be honored with great reverence. Narada read those and said: The Brahmin's son is good at doing so and speaks. How long has it been? Twelve years have passed. Great sage, that time is too long. Six? That's too long too. Three? One? Six months? Three months? One month? Half a month? Have seven days passed? Leaves of Ela, great sage, do it well like this! Stay there until then, he said, and then he stayed. What the sage Narada said was the five disciples, so he went to those people and said: Wise ones, a Brahmin's son has come to me with these questions and a golden vase, saying that whoever can speak the meaning of these questions will be given this golden vase and will also be honored with great reverence, but these questions have many meanings and few words, making them difficult to understand, so what should be done about this? They said: Narada, go and ask Shakyamuni Bhagavan! Wise ones, has Shakyamuni Bhagavan appeared in the world? He has appeared. Where does he reside? He resides in the Deer Park spoken of by the sage. They felt joy and delight, and quickly went to where the Bhagavan was. Narada saw that the body of Shakyamuni Bhagavan was adorned with the thirty-two major marks of a great man, beautified by the eighty minor marks, surrounded by a fathom of light, with light surpassing a thousand suns, like a moving mountain of jewels, everything was good. Just like seeing the Buddha for the first time with a mind that has accumulated roots of virtue, or a mind that has been accustomed to tranquility for twelve years, or a sonless person has obtained a son, or a poor person has seen a treasure, or a person who is very happy with the kingdom has been granted the throne, such happiness is not like that. After seeing him, he also went to where the Bhagavan was, and after going there, he bowed his head to the feet of the Bhagavan and sat to one side. After sitting to one side, the Bhagavan knew his thoughts, habits, and realm
