I will make offerings to the relics. He said, 'This householder is one whom I have cherished, loved, respected, and remembered for a long time, so I will make offerings to his relics.' Then, the householder Anathapindika went to where the Blessed One was, and upon arriving, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and sat to one side. Having sat to one side, the householder Anathapindika said to the Blessed One, 'Venerable sir, please listen. The venerable Shariputra is one whom I have cherished, loved, respected, and remembered for a long time, and his relics are in the hands of the venerable Ananda. Please, Blessed One, grant them to me, and I will make offerings to his relics.' Then, the Blessed One sent a messenger to summon the venerable Ananda and said, 'Ananda, give the relics of the monk Shariputra to the householder Anathapindika, and let him make offerings. Brahmins and householders are faithful because of this matter. Ananda, even if you do this much, it is not that you have benefited or repaid my teachings. Therefore, you should renounce, take full ordination, give lodging, be close for the sake of the monks, and also allow them to speak, allow them to listen, and allow them to learn as they appear. Only by doing this much will you have benefited and repaid my teachings.' Then, the venerable Ananda, according to the teacher's command, gave the relics of the venerable Shariputra to the householder Anathapindika, saying, 'In this way, when the Blessed One was formerly a Bodhisattva, he never broke the words of his parents, Khenpo, Acharya, and other such teachers.' Then, the householder Anathapindika took the relics of the venerable Shariputra and went to his own house, and upon arriving, he placed those relics in a high place inside the best of the houses, together with his family, friends, and relatives.

The assembly of beings dwelling in Shravasti heard how the venerable Shariputra had completely passed into nirvana in the town of Nalada in the land of Magadha, and that the venerable Ananda had taken his relics and given them to the householder Anathapindada.
