The Fifth Subtle Door, The Section on the Body. The Fifth Subtle Door, The Section on the Body. The summary is: body and discussion, Buddha and, abandonment of all things and my passing, monks outside the boundary, seasonal offerings and possessions. The summary is: the corpse is to be burned, the stupa of Shariputra, there seasonal offerings are to be made, conch shells and fish fins are merchants' (goods). The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove of Prince Jeta, in the Garden of Anathapindika. In Shravasti, there lived a householder who took a wife from the same lineage. From him and her together, until a son was born, and a great birth celebration was held for the boy for seven days, three days, twenty-one days, and the child was given a name according to the lineage, and he was raised and grew up to be a great man, just as before. After some time, he went forth into the well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya. Because his elements were not in harmony, he became ill. Although he was treated with medicines of roots, stems, flowers, and fruits, it was of no benefit, and he passed away. The monks, together with his alms bowl and Dharma robes, abandoned him near a road. When Brahmins and householders were traveling on that road, they saw him. Some said: Wise ones, a son of the Shakya clan has passed away. Others said: Come and see. They recognized him and said: Wise ones, this is the son of such and such a householder, who went forth among the helpless Shakya monks, and that is why he has come to this state. If he had not gone forth among these people, his relatives would have taken care of him. At that time, the monks reported this matter to the Bhagavan, and the Bhagavan taught: Monks, therefore, allow funeral rites to be performed for a deceased monk. After the Bhagavan said, "Perform funeral rites for a deceased monk," the monks did not know how to perform the funeral rites. The Bhagavan taught: Burn him. After the Bhagavan said, "Burn him," the venerable Ananda asked the Bhagavan:

Venerable Bhagavan said that there are eighty thousand kinds of insects in this body, what are those like? The Bhagavan taught: Attendant, those (insects) are born when (the deceased) is just born, and die when they die, but the wounds should be examined and then burned. After (the Bhagavan) said "should be burned," because there was no wood, the monks asked the Bhagavan at that time, and the Bhagavan taught: It should be thrown into the river. After there was no river, the Bhagavan taught: The ground should be dug and buried. In summer, the soil is wet and the wood is also living, the Bhagavan taught: Head facing the thick side, head facing north, put a grass mat as a pillow, lie on the right side, cover with grass or leaves, dedicate merit, give the Dharma of the Three Jewels to listen to, and then leave. After the monks left like that, the Brahmins and householders ridiculed: The Shakyas' Shramanas carry the corpse and leave without bathing, without cleanliness. At that time, the monks asked the Bhagavan, and the Bhagavan taught: It should not be left like that, but should be bathed. They all started to wash, and the Bhagavan taught: Do not wash all of them, those who have touched (the corpse) should wash with their clothes. Others should wash their hands and feet slightly. They do not bow to the stupa, and the Bhagavan taught: They should bow to the stupa. Buddha Bhagavan was staying in the Bamboo Grove Monastery (Kalandaka Venuvana) in Rajgir (around the 6th century BC). The conduct of the Venerable Shariputra and Maudgalyayana is to wander in the sentient hells from time to time, also to wander in the animals, also to wander in the hungry ghosts, also to wander in the gods, and also to wander in the humans. The two of them, at another time, while wandering in hell, arrived at the Great Hell of Avici, where the Venerable Shariputra said to the Venerable Great Maudgalyayana: Venerable Maudgalyayana, the mind of the hell beings...

May all beings rest! The venerable Maudgalyayana's son, having heard the venerable Shariputra's words, rose into the sky like the venerable Shariputra and began to pour down rain as thick as a chariot's axle. However, the water was dried up by the flames of the Avici hell. The venerable Shariputra said: Venerable Maudgalyayana's son, please rest for a moment, and I will let everyone rest. He replied: Good, please rest as well. Having said that, the venerable Maudgalyayana's son sat down. The venerable Shariputra entered the samadhi called "Desire for Joy" and thereby cooled the great Avici hell, cutting off the suffering of the beings in Avici hell. Then, the two of them saw an ascetic who, because he propagated false teachings, had become huge in body, and his tongue was being plowed by five hundred plows. The ascetic said: Venerable Shariputra and Maudgalyayana's son, if you go to Jambudvipa, please convey my words to those who practice like Brahma: Because I propagated false teachings and deceived many people, and they took and practiced wrongly from me, therefore my tongue is being plowed by five hundred plows. The more you destroy my stupas, the more unbearable suffering I endure, so please do not do this anymore. The venerable Shariputra and Maudgalyayana's son did not say anything to the ascetic, indicating their agreement. The venerable Shariputra and Maudgalyayana's son disappeared from Avici hell and went to Rajagriha. When the two of them arrived in Rajagriha, some wandering ascetics with staffs and topknots came out, and some of them said: Wise ones, strike these Shakyaputra's shramanas! Others said: It is not good to just strike them like that, we should find a pretext to strike them. They said: Let's do it that way! The venerable Shariputra went ahead, and those ascetics said to him: Venerable Shariputra, are there shramanas among the wandering ascetics? He replied in verse: Wanderers
