Poma The ministers of the heretics struck the great son of the noble Maudgalyāyana with sticks, shattering his limbs like reeds. The noble Śāriputra placed him in his monastic robe like a small bundle and brought him to the Grove of Light. Only a slight remnant of his life remained, and he would soon pass away. Upon hearing these rumors, the king became enraged and said to them, "Wise ones, seek out those heretics with staffs and topknots!" Then, together with his consorts, youths, and palace attendants, he went to the Grove of Light. There, many people saw the king and made way. The king, with eyes full of tears, slowly and unhappily asked in a compassionate voice, "What has happened to the great son of the noble Maudgalyāyana?" They replied, "Great king, it is due to karma; what else could it be? Noble one, were you not declared by the Blessed One to be foremost in miraculous powers?" Great king, it is indeed so, but oppressed by karma, even the word "miraculous power" cannot be remembered, let alone the power itself. The Blessed One never speaks falsely; the Blessed One has said: Through hundreds of thousands of kalpas, actions are not wasted. When conditions meet, beings will experience the fruition. They said this. The king wiped away his tears with the edge of his robe, summoned all the physicians, and commanded, "Wise ones, if you do not heal the great son of the noble Maudgalyāyana within seven days, I will strip you of your authority!" Having commanded this, he entrusted the matter to his ministers and departed. The heretics with staffs and topknots also fled upon hearing the news. The physicians began to discuss among themselves, "Wise ones, since the king has given such a command, what shall we do? The great son of the noble Maudgalyāyana is old, and all his limbs have been shattered like reeds; how can we heal him? Yes, he himself is powerful and possesses great miraculous abilities; let us take refuge in him." Some said

They replied, "Excellent, let it be done accordingly." Thus, all of them gathered and went to the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, prostrated at his feet, and said, "Venerable one, the gods have told us, 'If the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana does not recover in seven days, we will cut off your authority.' You are old, and we cannot manage as before. You have great miraculous powers and great strength, so please ensure that our authority is not cut off." He said, "Wise ones, if that is the case, then today announce to King Ajātaśatru, 'The venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana will enter Rājagṛha for alms in seven days.'" They were very pleased, prostrated at his feet, and went to King Ajātaśatru, prostrated at his feet, and said, "O King, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana will enter Rājagṛha for alms in seven days." The king was very pleased and said, "Wise ones, if that is the case, then excellent." As soon as the seven days were completed, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, by his own miraculous power, removed his discomfort and entered Rājagṛha for alms. The wisdom vision of the Arhats enters through contemplation. The venerable Śāriputra, contemplating why the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, being so old, was entering Rājagṛha for alms, saw that he desired to enter Parinirvana. He, being affected by the habit of affection for him, became ill on that very day and thought, "If the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana enters Parinirvana, why should I remain? I should enter Parinirvana first." Having thought thus, he went from Rājagṛha to the village of Nāla. Then the venerable Śāriputra, in the city of Nāla in the country of Magadha, was being diligently attended to by his attendant, suffering from a severe and painful illness. Thereafter, the venerable Śāriputra passed into Parinirvana due to that very illness, and the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana also went to the city of Kauśāmbī and passed into Parinirvana in the evening of that day.

When the venerable Shariputra completely passed into nirvana, most of the monks who possessed powers, a full eighty thousand, also completely passed into nirvana. When the venerable Maha Maudgalyayana completely passed into nirvana, again most of the monks who possessed powers, a full seventy-seven thousand, also completely passed into nirvana. Then, the novice prompter, having made offerings to the relics of the venerable Shariputra with his body, took the relics, the alms bowl, and the Dharma robes, and went wandering to where Rajagriha was, and gradually wandering, he arrived at Rajagriha. The novice prompter put down the alms bowl and Dharma robes, washed his two feet, and went to where the venerable Ananda was, and having arrived, he bowed to the two feet of the venerable Ananda with his head and sat to one side. Having sat to one side, the novice prompter said this to the venerable Ananda: "Venerable Ananda, please know that my preceptor, the venerable Shariputra, has completely passed into nirvana, and his relics, alms bowl, and Dharma robes are these." Then, the venerable Ananda, taking the novice prompter, went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, he bowed to the feet of the Blessed One with his head and sat to one side. Having said this, Venerable One, my body has become burning, and the direction is also lost, and the knowledge of the Dharma is also abandoned." The Basis of Minor Vinaya Matters. Volume Twenty-one.
