For that reason, they utter evil sighs and lamentations. Ananda, do not grieve, do not be dismayed, do not utter lamentations. Whatever is born, produced, created, compounded, thought of, and arises dependently, is of the nature of decay. How can it be that what is associated with this does not decay? That is impossible. Ananda, have I not already told you that all beloved things, painful things, joyful things, and satisfactory things will be separated, disappear, depart, and no longer be associated? Ananda, for example, a great tree with roots, with heartwood, with trunk, leaves, petals, flowers, and fruits, the highest leaves will fall first. The peaks of great jewel mountains, the highest ones, will also collapse first. Similarly, in the place where the Sangha of monks, including the Buddha, resides, the monk Shariputra has completely passed into nirvana. The direction in which the monk Shariputra resides, I am only slightly concerned. Like this, the direction in which the monk Shariputra resides, I see that it is not empty. Therefore, Ananda, do not grieve, do not be dismayed, do not utter lamentations. Ananda, therefore, whether I am alive now or after I have passed away, one should abide with oneself as an island, oneself as a refuge, the Dharma as an island, the Dharma as a refuge, not with another island as an island, not with another refuge as a refuge. Why is that? Ananda, whether now or after my nirvana, those who abide with themselves as an island, themselves as a refuge, the Dharma as an island, the Dharma as a refuge, not with another island as an island, not with another refuge as a refuge, like this, they are the foremost of my monks who desire to learn.

Become. How does a bhikkhu abide as an island unto himself, a refuge unto himself, a dharma island, a dharma refuge, not another island, not another refuge? Here, a bhikkhu dwells contemplating the body in the body internally, subduing covetousness and displeasure in the world, abiding with mindfulness and awareness, as well as the external body, the internal and external body, internal feelings, external feelings, internal and external feelings, internal mind, external mind, internal and external mind, internal dharmas, external dharmas, internal and external dharmas, contemplating the dharma in the dharmas, subduing covetousness and displeasure in the world, abiding with mindfulness and awareness. Kungawo (Ānanda), thus a bhikkhu abides as an island unto himself, a refuge unto himself, a dharma island, a dharma refuge, not another island, not another refuge. Then, the venerable Kungawo (Ānanda), greatly praised what the Bhagavan had said, rejoiced, bowed his head at the feet of the Bhagavan, and departed from before the Bhagavan. Just as the assembly of people dwelling in Rajagriha heard that the wanderers with staffs and topknots had cut off the limbs and joints of the great son Maudgalyāyana like reeds, the affection of the venerable Śāriputra for him also spread throughout the village. In the morning, it was heard that the venerable great son Maudgalyāyana had passed away in the village carpenter's shop. At that time, the bhikkhus were in doubt, and in order to cut off all doubts, they reported to the Buddha Bhagavan, who cuts off all doubts: "Venerable one, what deed did the venerable great son Maudgalyāyana commit, that as a result of that deed, the wanderers with staffs and topknots cut off his limbs and joints like reeds?" The Bhagavan replied: "Bhikkhus, the deed done and accumulated by this bhikkhu great son Maudgalyāyana, the gathering, the ripening of conditions, abiding near like a light, will inevitably arise without being consumed."
