"Venerable, whose is this sound of singing and musical instruments?" He said, "It is the mother of the Deer Park, named Sakya, of the monastic community of monks, who is going with medicine for the sick; the sound is hers." He said, "Venerable, if that is so, then Queen Garland has offered medicine for the sick to the monastic community of monks in my name; this should be told to the monastic community of monks." He said, "Queen, it is good. The Blessed One has also said that whoever cares for the sick cares for me. So you should offer to the monastic community of monks in your name." Having said this, he said, "May Queen Garland be without illness!" Then he rose from his seat and left. After that, he went to the temple, sat next to the elders, and said, "Queen Garland has offered medicine for the sick to the monastic community of monks; whoever wants what medicine, go and take it!" The steward issued the order, and the monks said, "Reverend Udayin, didn't the Blessed One say that there are ten faults in going to the royal palace? How can we violate the precepts for the sake of medicine?" He, having no courage, sat silently without saying anything. No monk asked for medicine from Garland. After a while, the Reverend Udayin also went to Queen Garland, and she said, "Venerable, didn't you offer medicine for the sick to the monastic community of monks in my name?" The Queen said, "I offered it." "Venerable, if that is so, why don't the monks come?" "Queen, didn't the Blessed One say that there are ten faults in going to the royal palace? How will the monks come here?" "Venerable, if that is so, what should I do about this?" "Queen, if you entrust the karshapana to the merchant of the market, let whichever monk wants whatever take it from him." She said, "Venerable, it is good, I will do so." So she entrusted the karshapana to the merchant of the market and said, "Venerables do not come to the royal palace, give whatever any monk wants to him." The merchant, by the Queen's order, used the karshapana

Having taken the coins and put them down, the monks heard the goddess Frengdenma instructing a certain incense seller: 'Entrust these karshapanas (kārṣāpaṇa, Sanskrit, a type of ancient Indian coin) to a certain incense seller, and whatever a monk wants, you should give it to him.' So they thought, 'Let's go and beg.' Then some monks went and said, 'Good sir, please make and give us some dried meat, meat, and meat broth!' Some said, 'Please give us meat and dried meat!' Some said, 'Please give us meat broth, curd, and cheese!' Those people, being harassed, said, 'Venerable ones, I am neither a porter nor a cook. Please take these things and go, and let whoever wants something do it themselves!' Those people said, 'Good sir, the Blessed One does not allow this.' He said, 'Venerable ones, I am an incense seller, living by trade. If that were the case, my livelihood would be cut off!' At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One instructed, 'Having trusted the benefactor and taken the karshapanas (kārṣāpaṇa, Sanskrit, a type of ancient Indian coin), you should use them as you wish, and you should not regret it.' The origin of the story is in Shravasti (mnyan yod, Tibetan place name, i.e., the ancient Shravasti, located in present-day Uttar Pradesh, India). The group of six were sitting together with laypeople on the same seat, and Brahmins and faithful householders saw them and ridiculed them, saying, 'Venerable ones, you are renunciates practicing celibacy, how can you sit on the same seat with these people who indulge in pleasures?' At that time, they sat there without saying anything, and the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One instructed, 'Monks, the ridicule of Brahmins and faithful householders is justified. Therefore, monks should not sit on the same seat with laypeople, for if they do, it will be a serious offense.' The Blessed One instructed, 'One should not sit on the same seat with laypeople.' The novices were sitting together with laypeople on the same seat, and the lay followers saw them and said, 'Venerable ones, you are fully ordained monks, how can you sit on the same seat with novices?' They said, 'Long-lived ones, these are not laypeople.'
